Program Description
This program prepares students to perform the roles and
responsibilities of a fitness and health consultant. Fitness and
health consultants provide services including planning, promoting
and delivering a wide variety of services, including activity and
educational programs, which enhance the health, fitness and
well-being of individuals and groups in diverse settings.
The curriculum focuses on three main areas established by the
Provincial Vocational Standards: Personal Training, Administration,
and Human Relations and Self-Development. Personal training deals
with fitness assessment, exercise prescription, program design,
instruction and support of individuals in appropriate activities to
meet a wide range of objectives and goals. Administration
concentrates on planning, promotion, provision and management of
safe and effective programs using professional business practices,
organizational skills and resources. Human Relations and
Self-Development involves development of leadership ability and
performance, communication and interpersonal skills as applied to
the motivation and counselling of others.
Transfer Credits & Articulation Agreements
Graduates of this program have direct transferability of 60
credits to the Bachelor of Professional Arts - Human Services
degree program at Athabasca University.
Graduates of this program have direct transferability of 30
credits to the Bachelor of Science - Human Science Post-Diploma
program at Athabasca University.
Graduates of this program may be eligible for 57
credits towards the Bachelor of Health Science degree
program at Thompson Rivers University, British
Columbia.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will find employment with existing private fitness
agencies, rehabilitation services, government oriented fitness
programs at all levels, youth-serving agencies and sports clubs and
fitness programs offered by business and industry. Non-teaching and
teaching opportunities in educational institutions and
sales/marketing opportunities are also possibilities.
Admission Requirements
OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),
University/College (U/C), or Open (O) stream WITH:
- Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U)
(Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)
OR
Academic and Career Entrance Certificate
(ACE) WITH:
- Communications
- Biology
(Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)
OR
Pre-Health Science Ontario College
Certificate*
(Note: minimum final average required is 2.0 GPA) AND:
- minimum final grade of 'C+' or 65 in the required courses stated
above
OR
General Arts and Science Ontario College
Certificate**
(Note: minimum final average required is 2.0 GPA) AND:
- minimum final grade of 'C+' or 65 in the required courses stated
above
OR
Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH:
- The combined Language Arts - Reading AND Language Arts - Writing
test results having a minimum average Standard Score of 520 AND:
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U)
(Note: minimum final grade required is 65)
OR
Mature Applicant with standing in the required courses and grades
stated above
Recommended Academic Preparation
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Chemistry (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Physics (C) or (U)

- Grade 12 Exercise Science (U)
Recommended Personal Preparation
- Certified lifeguard or swimming instructor credentials are an
asset
- Develop a high level of physical potential
- Develop the ability to work independently
- Develop good leadership skills
- Orientation to the fitness field
Applicant Selection Criteria
Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available
spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
- Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario.
- Receipt of Application by February 2nd.
- Achievement in the Admission Requirements.
Note:
- Admission to the Fanshawe College Pre-Health Science program
does not guarantee admission in a subsequent year to the Fitness
and Health Promotion program. Successful completion of the Fanshawe
College Pre-Health Science program, however, does enable the
student to be given additional consideration when applying to the
Fitness and Health Promotion program. The Pre-Health
Science program is the preferred designated preparatory
program for admission to the Fitness and Health Promotion
program.
- *Students who are currently registered in the Pre-Health
Science program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of
Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their
Pre-Health Science Ontario College Certificate with a minimum 2.0
GPA by April 30, 2009 and meet the academic pre-requisite courses
and grades for the Fitness and Health Promotion program in order to
be eligible for admission consideration in the immediately
following academic year to the Fitness and Health Promotion
program.
- **Students who are currently registered in the General Arts and
Science program at Fanshawe College or at any Ontario College of
Applied Arts and Technology must successfully complete their
General Arts and Science Certificate with a minimum 2.0 GPA by
April 30, 2009 and meet the academic pre-requisite courses and
grades for the Fitness and Health Promotion program in order to be
eligible for admission consideration in the immediately following
academic year to the Fitness and Health Promotion
program.
First Aid/Basic Rescuer Certificates
Students who register in the program will be required to possess a
standard First Aid course certificate (either St. John Ambulance or
Canadian Red Cross or equivalent) and a Basic Rescuer course
certificate (Level 'C' C.P.R.) VALID FOR THE DURATION OF THE
PROGRAM. Note: certification normally expires after a one year
period.
Other Information
- Applicants are advised that most field placement agencies may
require criminal reference checks and vulnerable position screening
to be conducted prior to placement of the student. Certain criminal
convictions for which pardons have not been received may or may not
permit placement in these agencies. In the latter cases, program
completion may not be possible. Any questions regarding criminal
reference checks may be directed to the Academic Manager of the
School of Health Sciences of the College.
