Students Speak
We think the Integrated Land Planning Technologies program is amazing. But don't just take our word for it. Here it straight from our graduates:

Greg Barker - Barrie, ON
The ILPT program prepared me, and even opened my eyes to a much broader level of the planning industry. I was exposed to various technologies used in the field and felt knowledgeable because of the planning theory I learned in the program. When I graduated, I felt ready for the workforce. The ILPT program has taken me from a prospective landscape designer/architect to a planner for a private company north of the GTA. During my co-op semesters I was employed as a landscape designer, and upon graduation found my career in the planning field.

How do you feel about the ILPT teachers?
My teachers were more like mentors. They made certain that each lesson was taught, regardless of how long it may have taken. Being on a first name basis with teachers is a definite benefit that only smaller programs can provide. By integrating many classes, students could take lessons from one class, and apply it to another.

Four of the best years of my life! A three-year diploma would only be 75% of how awesome it really was!!

Casey Kulchycki - London, ON
What's the best thing about the ILPT program?
Many options for the price of one! With so many different disciplines (Landscaping, Planning, and GIS), graduates are extremely versatile in the types of positions they can apply for. Many employers are able to fill two positions with one person. Personally the program has benefited me by expanding my knowledge of urban design/planning and exposed me to the field of landscape design, which I have discovered a love for!

The professors teaching in the ILPT program are also very well trained and have a lot of real world experience and any student learning from them will be very well prepared for the working world.

I get to have letters after my name! Seriously though, having more theory then the average college program but still maintaining the same amount of practical/hands-on experience puts graduates on the same level (or higher) than a lot of university grads in the same field.

How did you hear about the program?
I had attended Fanshawe previously in the Urban and Regional Planning program (diploma) and they had a bridging program that allowed me to stream into the third year of the ILPT program.

Mike Kari - Vaughan, ON
How did you hear about the program?
I was a student of Landscape Design at Fanshawe College and was able to bridge into the ILP degree after completing my diploma. I had considered other programs at other institutions, but the ILPT degree offered me the most useful skills and knowledge, and at the same time was very technologically advanced.

My co-op experience has proven to be a huge asset in my career. Fanshawe also provided me with a fantastic learning environment and I have made life long friends, both classmates and teachers. Thanks to my education, I was able to obtain a job at the City of Vaughan as a Landscape Architectural Technician. I stood out above other candidates because my education provided me with multiple strengths other candidates did not possess, such as the ability to be proficient in both AutoCAD and GIS. Fanshawe has provided me with a fantastic platform and I am now able to begin to achieve my life goals.

Greg Britton - Stratford, ON
The ILPT program provided me with the skills and experience I needed to get and maintain a job in my field. I felt as though I increased my value as an employee by having the degree credentials and knowledge from the program. Over the past few years I've worked with the Waterloo Regional Waste Management Facility expanding the methane power plant and with the Collingwood and Toronto municipal water management facilities.

Aaron Clarke - London, ON
I really enjoyed the ILP program. The teachers were great and the small class sizes that Fanshawe offers really benefited this type of program. The class was a tight community; we all got along and helped each other. Overall I would say it was the best learning experience I could have ever asked for. The course covered a variety of subjects which all tied together. The program gave me excellent transferable skills that I can use for the field and also in other areas not related directly to ILPT.

So what do some of the Employers think about our ILPT grads?

Our student was very well prepared for the entry-level co-op placement. She was aware of the overall nature of planning and the general kinds of projects and tasks undertaken in local planning settings. In our experience there was a balance in the acknowledgment of rudimentary theoretical knowledge and application of basic technical skills. It was readily apparent that our first year student was comfortable with a considerable amount of "jargon" and familiar with such implementation strategies and tools as Official Plans, Zoning by-laws and plans of subdivision. Overall, our student experience reflected well on Fanshawe. So much so she is now working full-time for us.

At the Town of Ingersoll we were seeking students with both practical and technical skills to assist in the implementation of our GIS system. We went to Fanshawe College for these skills because their students are trained using the latest technology and do hands on training in their assignments. I feel since the instructors have worked in related fields they go out of their way to design classroom assignments to challenge their students. We have been very satisfied with the professionalism and quality of work performed on this project by the students and from our experiences would recommend the co-op program to any future employer.
