New chair, members for Research Ethics Board
The Fanshawe College Research Ethics Board (REB) has elected Otte Rosenkrantz as its 2010/11 chair. Rosenkrantz is a faculty member and a curriculum consultant in the Centre for Academic Excellence. The Fanshawe College Research Ethics Board (REB) has announced its hearing dates for 2010/11. The REB meets monthly throughout the academic year to review research projects involving human subjects. View the schedule.
SSHRC restructures programs, issues new RFPs
The Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council, a major funder of research in Canada, has completed a major review of its programs, a move that has culminated in the issuing of the first two requests for proposal under the new structure. The federal agency's 30 programs have been regrouped into three major clusters with the new structure to be rolled out over the summer and into 2011. The just-issued RFPs are for the

Partnerships Grants programs, with respective deadlines of
November 25 and

Feds announce new college research infrastructure fund
Colleges, polytechnics and institutes will now have access to a special research infrastructure fund administered by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the federal government announced July 26. A total of $32 million will be available for research equipment and facilities to enable colleges to support applied research and innovation with the private sector. The first request for proposals is expected by December.

Companies: hiring Fanshawe grads for R&D jobs pays off
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who hire college graduates for R&D positions may be eligible for salary assistance under
First Job, a program offered by the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE). The recruit must be a graduate of a postsecondary science, technology or entrepreneurship program and be employed specifically in an R&D job. The employer, recruit and an OCE business development officer work together on the application. Applications are accepted anytime and are reviewed by OCE three times per year. How-tos and other tools posted for new researchers
Resources aimed at new or aspiring researchers have been posted on the new Research Skills Development Tools page. RF has downloaded "how-to" workshops ranging from proposal writing, survey design and data analysis to how to do a literature search.
