About Theatre Arts
It is our philosophy that fundamental to the actor's craft is hard work and creative understanding. The skills are acquired through self-knowledge and discipline and must be individual to each actor student. As such, it is important that each student discover their own way of working, that they have the freedom to try new things in a safe environment and the encouragement to be brave and fearless and to truly own their own work.
To that end, students are expected to meet heavy commitment and time demands and the language and tools used by the professors is consistent and positive. At the core of the program is the Acting, Voice and Movement training. Core classes take place in the mornings, Monday to Friday, from 8am to noon or 9am to 1pm, depending on the year/section of the student. Theatre History is also offered one morning or afternoon a week as part of the core training. Afternoons, evenings and weekends are dedicated to Practicum hours. These include externally-directed and self-directed hours of rehearsal and exploration. Students also receive training in the Business of Acting (Technical Theatre), Acting for the Camera and Vocal Ensemble (ensemble singing). In addition, various guests work with students periodically throughout the year on specialized skills such as Stage Fight, Commedia, Monologues and other actor based skills as needed and available.
In the second year, the Fall term spent on Shakespeare culminates in a Shakespeare project and the Winter term is dedicated to two grad shows, directed by current and well-recognized directors in the profession.
At the end of the two years, students attend Industry Auditions. Students present one or two monologues to an invited audience of industry professionals including talent and casting agents and managers, artistic directors and actors.
