Your Learning Experience

The world of journalism is constantly changing, requiring a diverse skill set across television and digital media. Our industry-trained and experienced faculty will teach you how to write effective news stories and shine in front of a camera, as well as how to operate cameras, edit footage, write captivating news copy and conduct compelling interviews. You’ll also gain comprehensive knowledge of television and digital media production, directing and research, graduating as a versatile videographer, capable of adapting to any situation and work environment.

 

Take your media career to the next level, by studying in Canada’s premiere broadcasting centre, an industry-leading live news studio and green screen facility. You will apply your learning in a hands-on working environment creating current content for and producing a weekly live news program which airs on Rogers TV. You’ll also have the opportunity to expand your portfolio of experience and network with industry connections during a two-month internship in a newsroom. Graduate with a diverse set of storytelling skills that are applicable in a variety of media jobs.

 

For students interested in studying further, Brock University and Fanshawe College have developed an articulation agreement, which gives you the opportunity to obtain a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies, as well as a graduate certificate in Journalism - Television and Digital News. Students may start at either institution and receive credit transfer, graduating with both a degree and graduate certificate in only four years.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Research, write, and read prepared news stories ethically and independently for delivery on multiple platforms.
  2. Analyze the legitimacy of news sources and the implication of stories to create content designed for various audiences.
  3. Conduct interviews, operate equipment in the control room, and collaborate with a production team to deliver newscasts.
  4. Track weather and breaking news of local, national, and international significance to disseminate information to television and digital audiences.
  5. Shoot and edit video news stories using industry-standard hardware and software to inform television and digital audiences.
  6. Perform all journalistic duties following industry regulatory, ethical, and legal guidelines.
  7. Develop and apply networking strategies to support professional goals in the journalism industry.
  8. Create a multi-skilled journalist portfolio to display versatile content creation and dissemination skills.
  9. Deliver news as an on-air anchor to a television audience.

Applicant Selection Criteria

Applicant Selection Criteria

Where the number of eligible applicants exceeds the available spaces in the program, the Applicant Selection Criteria will be:
  1. Preference for Permanent Residents of Ontario
  2. Receipt of Application by February 1st (After this date, Fanshawe College will consider applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full)
  3. Achievement in the Admission Requirements
  4. Preference will be given to graduates of the Fanshawe College Journalism - Broadcast program

Note:

  • Students applying for the Broadcast Journalism - Television News program with a two-year Journalism - Broadcast Ontario College Diploma should have obtained a 'B' average in all the BRJR courses in the second year of the program at Fanshawe College, or a 'B' average in the Journalism courses in second year from another institution or a 'B' average in the second year of the Broadcasting - Television program from Fanshawe College or another institution.  Applicants with less than a 'B' average will be considered only on the recommendation of the Academic Manager.

An application of newscast and reporting, on camera presentation skills, live and taped broadcasts, voice overs etc, interviews in studio and the field.

The effective use of words, pictures and sound to tell stories. Students will produce television and digital news stories for internal and industry partners.

This course takes students through intensive practical experience in news and current affairs production, including studio work, story creation and the implementation of production elements for television and digital platforms.
NEWS-6028News Editing2.5
This course will introduce students to basic post production using industry standard software. Focus will be on news editing styles and techniques. The primary goal is to acquaint the student with industry editing concepts, procedures and styles. A secondary component includes exposure to basic graphics creation techniques. Media and file management will also be covered.

This course is designed to have the student actively become involved in a field production. The student will participate in newsgathering, writing, reporting for digital and television news productions. The student must function effectively as part of the team when interacting with staff, crew, talent and other volunteers. They are also encouraged to use the experience to develop and enhance their personal professional development.

This course will introduce students to visual news gathering techniques. Shooting techniques used in contemporary visual storytelling will be taught. Students will learn the basics of composition, lighting, framing, all technical operations of industry standard equipment in news gathering and storytelling.
