Knowledge Infrastructure Program
Early in 2009, the College received $15.9 million each from the Government of Ontario and from the federal government's Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP), which was created to fund "shovel-ready" projects at colleges and universities.
On November 20, 2009, Fanshawe held a groundbreaking ceremony, and crews began work immediately, spending just over 14 months to complete the building. As of February 2011, construction was largely completed and Fanshawe was able to host guests from both the Provincial and Federal governments for tours of the facility.

When it is finished, Fanshawe's new Centre for Applied Transportation Technologies
will be one of the most advanced transportation training centres in the country.
Job-Ready Students
The first classes in the new CATT will be held in April 2011.
The new CATT will accommodate 1,500 full-time, part-time, apprenticeship and continuing education students who are seeking job-ready credentials in trades and technologies that support the transportation industry. It will also provide much needed additional classroom space to serve enrolment growth (previously accommodated in temporary leased space).
The finished building will have a gross area of approximately 148,000 square feet (13,800 sm) comprised of 16 classrooms, 13 labs and 7 shops as well as necessary support spaces. Also included is Office space for the newly-renamed School of Transportation Technology (formerly, School of Motive Power Technology), as well as a servery/cafeteria and several student lounges.
Students graduating from this Centre will have had the benefit of a state-of-the-art facility able to simulate real world scenarios. They will enter the job market with the sort of hands-on experience that employers are seeking.
Going Green
In addition to state-of-the-art equipment and learning tools, the facility will feature a variety of exciting green innovations, including:
- Vegetated green roof system over shop areas
- Storm water reclamation for toilet flushing and site irrigation
- Solar hot water preheating
- Solar powered GPS tracking skylights for natural daylighting in the auto shop
- Natural daylighting
- Passive solar shading
- Enhanced thermal protection
- Occupancy and daylight sensors, VSD's, energy efficient lighting and enhanced building automation systems
- Many low/no VOC materials and finishes
- Other environmental/sustainability initiatives and materials
