Plan for Success - Are You Ready?
Research and plan
Exciting challenges lie ahead of you. Over the next few years you will be faced with many choices that will help shape your future.
When you start to look at your options why not start by considering your interests. What kinds of work do you like to do? What don't you like to do? What motivates you to do well? The answers you come up with to these types of questions will help you decide your career direction.
Once you have decided the type of program you want to take, it's time to decide which college to attend. Programs vary in emphasis and delivery from college to college. College program guides, pamphlets, web sites and information sessions can help you decide which college best meets your needs. Visit the colleges you're considering and go on a tour, talk to a teacher and speak with a student to gain the student's perspective of the program and the college.
Once you've decided where you want to go to college, you must determine how you are going to afford to pay for tuition, books and living expenses, as well as where you are going to live.
Consider your own and your family's resources; investigate college financial aid programs, bursaries, and loan programs; ask if there are any special programs for active community volunteers. These programs are not the same at all colleges. Some colleges have these programs available only for returning students.
Prepare a budget to help you estimate your school costs and your living expenses. This is important information for planning your years at college.
If you are not sure which program you want to take, make an appointment with a college counsellor to discuss your goals and what the college can offer to you. Most colleges offer career counselling and testing services. At Fanshawe College contact Counselling and Accessibility Services at (519) 452-4282.
