MOTORCYCLE

Hello.

I'm writing to thank ALL staff members associated with the motorcycle training program at Fanshawe College in London.

My wife and I have completed both the M2 and the M2 Exit training courses as of August 2009.

The training helped me avoid two potentially serious accidents in the span of two days during the week of June 7th, 2010.

The first incident occurred on June 11, 2010 during a ride from London to Leamington on Highway # 3.  I was following a passenger car approximately 3 - 4 seconds behind the vehicle when suddenly the car braked aggressively.  I could not go left due to oncoming traffic and there was a guard rail and soft gravel on the right hand side.   Thankfully I was able to execute an emergency stop and avoid rear ending the car.  It wasn't perfect but I stopped.  I practice emergency stopping at least once a week during riding season and am gradually learning to apply the proper amount of front and rear brake to avoid skidding.

The second incident occurred on June 12, 2010 within London city limits.  I was travelling at approximately 50 - 60 kms per hour and on a two lane street.  I entered an intersection and a vehicle stopped on my right turned in front of me.  Thankfully I had been scanning and looking further down the road and I knew that no other traffic was coming in the other lane towards me. I had also moved over to the left a bit just prior to entering the intersection just in case.  When the car pulled out I instinctively was able to avoid hitting the other vehicle by quickly push steering and avoiding a collision.

The M2 course taught us the basics with respect to control of our motorcycles and the M2 Exit course increased our knowledge of proper lane positioning etc but the most important lesson I learned is to scan ahead and behind for potential hazards at all times.  In the scenarios above I believe I did everything I could to avoid putting myself at risk by employing valuable riding skills learned at Fanshawe College.

Thanks again!
