COMPULSORY AND ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Corseting & Evening Wear (FASH-1031)
Explore the history of corset use in fashion styles and modern adaption applicable to bridal apparel and stage costumes, etc. Topics covered: measurement, fit, supplies, construction and care. Kit provided at first class includes foundation materials. Students can embellish their projects with fashion fabric (discussed during class). Students must also provide own portable sewing machine and have good sewing skills
Fee: $137.02 + $113 MF + HST
Knitwear (FASH-1032)
Sewing with knits is a great experience as these fabrics lend themselves to producing such professional looking garments from a basic T-shirt to bathing suits, skating, dance and gymnastic apparel. Learn basic techniques, tips, and tricks to create knitwear from these stretchy fabrics. Fabric selection, stabilizing seams, hems/edges and construction methods included. Students to provide own materials and supplies. Students require own portable zigzag sewing machine. A serger would be an asset.
Fee: $103.18 + MF
Specialty Fabrics (FASH-1033)
Develop the knowledge on how to select and work with different textiles for garment construction. Learn textile history, origins as well as the process of various fabrics.
Ladies Tailored Jacket (FASH-1036)
Pre-requisite: FASH-1023 or equivalent experience.
Learn professional techniques to ensure your garments achieve a professional standard. Examine the details of cutting, fitting, sewing and pressing a tailored garment in a natural fabric such as wool. Complete a tailored suit jacket/coat (including skirt or pants). Students to provide own materials.
Men’s Tailored Jacket (FASH-1037)
Pre-requisite FASH-1023 or equivalent experience.
Learn professional tailoring tips for men's jackets and vests. Examine the details of cutting, fitting, hand basting sewing and pressing a tailored garment in a natural fibre fabric such as wool. Construct a men's or boys garment. Students to provide own materials.
How to Start a Small Business (MGMT-1049)
Discover ways to improve your chances of SUCCESS by minimizing the risk! This is a complete how-to course including start-up costs, obtaining financing, marketing, staffing, purchasing, inventory control, government regulations, financial statements, legal forms, analysis and planning.
Industrial Sewing (FASH-1024)
A practical introduction to industrial sewing machines geared for students entering the fashion design program or those who have only sewn on domestic machines. Students apply safe practices to construct two projects. The material fee covers materials and supplies required for this workshop, bring pen and paper.
Alternations to Ready-To-Wear (FASH-1034)
Pre-requisite(s): Basic sewing skills
Techniques for altering off the rack items so that they will fit properly. Learn how to perform the most common alterations and repairs to men's and ladies' clothing. Students are required to bring: jeans, pants and the correct sized jeans zipper for their first class.
Pattern Alternations (FASH-1035)
Focus on pattern adjustments to give a more personalized fit to dresses, blouses and skirts. These alterations will enable you to solve fitting issues in sewing garments from commercial patterns. Construct a fitted basic muslin shell. Students are responsible for materials and supplies.
