Program Description

The Academic & Career Entrance Certificate Program is provincially recognized as equivalent to Grade 12 for the purpose of admissions to all Ontario Colleges in pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship, and post-secondary programs. It is also recognized by many employers. The learning that takes places in this program is organized by six competencies that describe a person's abilities. The competencies represent the full range of skills, knowledge, and attitudes that adults can expect to develop for success in life, learning and work. The six competencies include: find and use information, communicate ideas and information, understand, and use numbers, use digital technology, manage learning, and engage with others.

This course focuses on consolidating students' basic mathematical skills, problem-solving techniques, and will provide the basics of functions, analytic geometry, and trigonometry. Students will select 2 or 3 of the following areas in addition to the above skills: operating with functions, statistics and probability, personal finance, workplace finance, exponential growth, and applications of sequences and series. These skills with prepare them for various college apprenticeship programs, and/or for the workplace.

This course incorporates literacy, critical thinking and communication skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will study and analyze informational and graphic texts. Student will also create oral, written and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing.

Students will learn concepts and theories as they conduct investigations in the areas of cellular biology, microbiology, animal anatomy and physiology, plant structure and physiology, and genetics. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of concepts, and on the skills needed for further study in various branches of the life sciences and related fields.

This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore these concepts with respect to motion; mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic, energy transformation, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; and the operation of commonly used tools and machines. They will develop their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics and solve both assigned problems and those emerging from their investigations. Students will also consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

Students will study qualitative analysis, quantitative relationships in chemical reactions, organic chemistry, electrochemistry, and chemistry as it relates to the quality of the environment. Emphasis will be placed on the role of chemistry in daily life and in the development of new technologies and products.

The course builds on and expands the fundamental algebraic skills mastered in grade 12 foundation mathematics. The objective of the course is to teach students the necessary mathematical skills in preparation for technical/math-focused post-secondary college programs. After successful completion of the learning outcomes, students will be able to use their skills to solve applied problems involving linear/polynomial/rational/exponential expressions and equations, logarithmic functions, radical and complex numbers.
