Driver Education With Simulator Enhancement
Fanshawe College is one of only a few Driver Education training facilities - and the only one in the London area - to offer a novice driver training program with simulator enhancement.
Michael Harrison demonstrates the driving simulator
As part of the MTO-approved SafeStart program, the College will teach new drivers steering and handling techniques in a variety of highway, freeway, and city traffic scenarios before ever getting into a real car for their in-vehicle training. This allows new drivers in training to experience bad weather, road hazards, and many other driving challenges on the simulator before they get out in the real deal.
"A simulated environment is a much better place to have your first experience with a driving mistake or mechanical failure," says program consultant Michael Harrison, who oversees Transportation programs offered through Continuing Education at Fanshawe.
As added incentive, novice drivers don't even need a G1 licence to take the course. "They can get the in-class and simulator training done first," says Harrison. "When they're ready, they can get their G1 licence and then complete the in-car segment."
In effect, new drivers get the chance to make their mistakes and improve their habits in a risk-free setting. Once they've got a feel for how vehicles respond in a variety of situations they can apply those skills in an outdoor environment.
