Scholarship Winner Credits Work at 106.9 The X

December 1, 2008
EElyse Skura has become the second student in Fanshawe's history to receive the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) Scholarship. The first Fanshawe College winner was Blake Roberts who works for CBC-TV News Windsor.

The $2,500 CAB national scholarship is awarded annually to an aspiring broadcaster enrolled in broadcast journalism courses at a Canadian college or university. Skura is also a two-time winner of the Radio and Television News Directors Association of Canada national scholarship with a total award of $4000.00.

A graduate of Fanshawe's Journalism-Broadcast program, Skura is currently at Western doing an honours year in the Media, Information and Technoculture, a collaborative diploma/degree program offered jointly through Western and Fanshawe.

Skura credits her CAB win in part to her work at Fanshawe as the student news director of 106.9 The X. Because of Fanshawe's collaboration with AM980 in London, Skura said, she was able to get a part-time job at Corus Radio London. "This was a really great experience for me and I was also able to spend a short time doing weekend news casting at AM980's sister station (AM640) in Toronto, my hometown, over the summer."

While she loves radio news, Skura isn't limiting her options. "I would like to travel and work in a few different Canadian newsrooms. I have a great fondness for radio, but I will probably also try my hand at television some time in the future." Skura has already done a production internship at CityTV in Toronto working on CityLine.
