Scholarships Available to Children and Foster Children of OPSEU Members

Children of Fanshawe College faculty and staff who are members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) are eligible to apply for the four National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) scholarships, three of which are specific to people with disabilities, Aboriginal Canadians and visible minorities.

The $1,500 Tommy Douglas Scholarship is open to all students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2009-2010 who are children of, or foster children of, a member of NUPGE. It will be awarded to the writer of the best 750-1,000 word essay on, "how Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society."

The $1,500 Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship is open to all students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2009-2010 who are children of, or foster children of, a member of NUPGE. It will be awarded to the writer of the best 750-1,000 word essay on "the importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities."

The $1,500 Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2009-2010 who are children of, or foster children of, a member of NUPGE. It will be awarded to the writer of the best 750-1,000 word essay on "the importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians."

The $1,500 Scholarship for Visible Minorities is open to all visible minority students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2009-2010 who are children of, or foster children of, a member of NUPGE. It will be awarded to the writer of the best 750-1,000 word essay on "the importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities."
