Support Staff Bargaining Update
Provincial Support Staff (OPSEU Local 109) bargaining continues today and we are hopeful that that negotiations will result in a successful resolution by the midnight deadline. In the event there is no resolution and there is a strike September 1, Fanshawe College has contingency plans in place to ensure that the College is open and classes run as scheduled. As well as classes and most labs, other services will be available to students, such as the library, all academic offices, counseling and accessibility services. The Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid and the bookstore will be open as well; students and staff are asked to allow extra time for these services due to possible line-ups. Updates will be posted to the College website as available. www.fanshawec.ca <http://www.fanshawec.ca>
In the event of a strike, everyone’s safety is top priority. To that end, staff, students and visitors to campus are asked to review the following points regarding crossing a picket line:
§ Picket lines may be setup at major College entrances. (Click here for how to cross a picket line)
§ Consider public transportation, get dropped off, car pool or enter by foot
§ Be polite and patient at all times
§ Be prepared mentally – expect large groups of people walking, carrying signs, handing out flyers, and speaking to you briefly
§ Expect delays – allow for extra time
§ Whether walking or driving, accept flyers or brochures and keep conversations pleasant and brief
§ If driving, drive slowly. Stop when necessary. You will be allowed to cross
§ Ease your car through the line; do not accelerate or rev your engine
§ Inappropriate behaviour on a picket line by any person is unacceptable and may be unlawful.
