St. Thomas/Elgin Campus to receive
$150,000 to enhance apprenticeship program
St. Thomas, ON - The Fanshawe College Industrial
Millwright apprentice program is receiving a boost from
the Ontario government’s Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund.
The province has announced a grant of $150,000 to Fanshawe’s St.
Thomas/Elgin campus to be used to purchase equipment that will support the
program.
About 100 Industrial Millwright apprentices study at the St. Thomas/Elgin
campus each year. Millwrights install, maintain and repair machinery and
equipment used in many industries. While workers in almost all trades are in
high demand, millwrights are especially in need across Ontario.
Tom Pickard, Principal of Fanshawe’s St. Thomas/Elgin campus says the
funding will be used to purchase hydraulic and pneumatic trainers and a pump
trainer that will be effective tools for teaching and evaluating apprentice
skills.
"This money will allow us to enhance the quality of our Industrial
Millwright apprentice program," says Pickard. "We’ve been working to upgrade
all four areas of this program - machining, welding, electrical/electronics
and now, hydraulics and pneumatics. We’re very excited and will ensure that
this money goes to work for our students and their employers."
The equipment purchase has been tendered and Pickard say the College
expects to have the equipment in place by early summer.
The funding for the program is part of $9 million targeted by the Ontario
government for the existing Apprenticeship Enhancement Fund for upgraded
training facilities.
