With YMCA for Kids' Camps ::
Fanshawe College Continuing Education teamed up with
the YMCA to offer Kids' Camps for children six to twelve years old.
Whether the kids were interested in robotics, improv
theatre, crime scene investigation (CSI) or the arts,
there was a camp for everyone. The kids were learning
valuable information and having a blast doing it!
"The camps give kids something to do in the summer,"
said Maureen Korhonen, Program Consultant, Continuing
Education. "(The kids) get to try out new things, and it's
a good way of introducing not only the kids, but their
parents to Fanshawe College and the facilities and get
them thinking about postsecondary education long before the child
is ready to attend."
This year's camps have gone really well according to
Korhonen, especially the CSI camp. "The camp was full as
soon as registration started," recalled Korhonen. If the
other camps weren't completely full, they were only a few
students short of capacity, which helps to solidify the
goal to run Y camps again next year.
"It's nice to have the support of the YMCA to help kids
who couldn't otherwise afford camp, get the opportunity to
come," said Korhonen. "As well, the Y has great camp
counsellor training programs and they help to run the
camps, so the full work load isn't on Fanshawe's
shoulders."
Camps began in the first week of July and continue
through to August 24, 2007. During the third week of camp
alone, over 150 campers were on site at the college to
participate in activities.
Fanshawe College students and staff who would like more
information on how they can be involved next year, are
