Ontario colleges applied research activities featured

Applied research at colleges is all about adding value, solving problems and training students to become tomorrow's highly skilled employees. That's the message in Canada's Innovation Leaders 2010, a special supplement which appears in today's (Nov. 5) National Post. The publication -- which includes both university and college research -- showcases some of the exciting college-business innovation projects going on across the province, including those at Fanshawe College. It also will appear in the Ottawa Citizen Nov. 6, and in the Hill Times Nov. 9. Produced by RESEARCH Infosource Inc., the supplement can be read at http://www.researchinfosource.com/advert.shtml.

R&D helps businesses innovate, says report

A new report by the Conference Board of Canada on the impact of Ontario college applied research shows that college-business R&D partnerships - as modest as they are at present -- are stimulating research and innovation that otherwise would not occur in the province. In addition, they are reducing time to market for new and improved products, processes and services, and helping develop a highly skilled, innovation-ready workforce through the participation of students in projects. However, the report notes, larger impact is limited by low awareness of college services on the part of potential clients, and colleges' lack of resources to fund faculty release time and support R&D activities. Companies surveyed for the study reported improved market position (79%), entry to new markets (58%), new customers (76%) and improved customer satisfaction (59%) because of their projects with colleges. The Conference Board says that 80% of the college-business collaborations have, or are expected to increase sales and revenues for the companies involved. What colour is innovation? Green!

The Centre for Sustainable Energy & Environments (CSEE) was created to bring together academic, entrepreneurial, technical and business expertise to help companies innovate in areas of emerging green and renewable technologies -- technologies that impact building, transportation, energy transmission, management, conservation and optimization, food production and the quality of life in our communities. CSEE is funded by a $2.3 million grant from the federal College and Community Innovation Fund (CCI), an applied research funded for Canadian colleges administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). In addition, the College and its private sector partners are contributing $1.8 million in cash and in-kind contributions to the centre.
