Local Falcons reflect on their opportunity to participate in the FISU games
(London, Ontario) – Fanshawe student-athletes Matt Catalano (Men's Soccer) and Sebastian Lethbridge (Men's Volleyball) are currently representing Canada in the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.
The Men's Soccer team defeated Malaysia 2-1 to finish group play. Catalano started and played 90 minutes for Team Canada in their first win of the tournament. In the classification matches, Canada won 2-0 over USA and went on to defeat South Africa 2-1.
When asked about his experience so far, Catalano replied, "Getting the opportunity to put on a Canadian jersey and represent your country against some of the top athletes from around the world is an indescribable feeling. Fanshawe has been a huge part in making this all possible. My coach Rob Pereira has been nothing but supportive during this whole process and was the one who referred me to the Team Canada coach. This is something you always dream about and now that I actually have the opportunity to represent Canada, it's one of the best feelings in the world."
On August 29 at 4:00 am ET, the Men's Soccer squad will play their final game versus Brazil for 9th place in the FISU games.
The Men's Volleyball team saw consecutive losses to Argentina and Iran to finish fourth in Pool D. In the classification match, Canada defeated Romania 3-2, before falling to France 3-1.
