(London, Ontario) – On Wednesday night, at the CCAA National Men's Volleyball Championship Banquet, Fanshawe Falcons Head Coach Patrick Johnston was named the 2016 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year. This is the first time in Fanshawe's history that a head coach of the volleyball program has received this honour.
For the third consecutive season, Johnston was named the OCAA West Coach of the Year. It was also the second time that Johnston has won the overall OCAA Coach of the Year award (2013-14) in just his third season at Fanshawe.
This season, Johnston led the Falcons to an OCAA Provincial Championship, only the second time in the programs history and first in 46 years. The Falcons finished their league play in first place in the OCAA West Division with a record of 16-2, and were on a nine-game winning streak heading into the postseason. At the Provincial Championship, his team went undefeated, winning all three matches in three straight sets, enroute to the gold medal. For the majority of the season, his team was ranked nationally, including the final five weeks of the year at #2 in Canada.
“When I hired Patrick it was very clear that he was going to be an excellent head coach,” said Fanshawe Athletics Manager of Athletics, Nathan McFadden. “His leadership and passion for learning has been outstanding and his student-athletes love playing for him. This award recognizes the tremendous accomplishments that he and his team have achieved so far this season. Patrick has also quickly become a valuable and recognizable member of our London volleyball community and continues to further athlete development in our area. He certainly embodies Fanshawe Athletics key values of ‘Character-Championships-Community' and we congratulate him on this prestigious award.”
Over his three years at Fanshawe, Johnston's teams have been very successful. They have had a combined league record of 42-12 and a playoff record of 9-3, good for an overall winning percentage of .785.
