(London, Ontario) – On Sunday evening in Oshawa, the Fanshawe Men's Basketball team (12-9, 6th in West) won their first round playoff match-up against the Durham Lords (15-6, 3rd in East) by a final score of 63-59.
The Falcons were in tough, being matched up against a strong Lords team in front of an excited crowd. Sean Clendinning (Orillia, ON) hit a three pointer to open the Falcons scoring. The two teams traded points throughout the beginning of the first quarter. Fanshawe then went on an 11-0 run to end the first quarter and to start the second quarter. The Falcons held a 34-24 lead at the break.
The Lords came out flying in the third quarter and went on a 6-0 run of their own. That run was ended when the Falcons Filip Pejic (Hamilton, ON) hit a triple to silence the home crowd. Chris Parker (Toledo, OH) had a nice put back at the third quarter buzzer to keep Fanshawe up 51-40 after three. In the final quarter, the Lords made another push, getting within two points of the Falcons. Sean Clendinning made an exceptional pass to find a cutting D'Andre Austin (Toronto, ON), who finished the strong take to the rim. The Lords were forced to foul down the stretch and Sean Clendinning made no mistake, sinking both free throws to hold on to the lead and ultimately win the game 63-59. Parker led the team in scoring, recording 17 points and adding 8 rebounds.
Fanshawe advances to the OCAA Provincial Championship at Niagara College from March 1-3. They will play the Sheridan Bruins (17-4, 2nd in West) in an OCAA quarter-final at 8pm on Thursday, March 1.
