MEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

The Fanshawe Men's Volleyball team defeated the St. Clair Saints at home on Wednesday evening 3-0. The victory improves the Falcons' record to 9-2 after the first semester. Fanshawe is currently ranked second in the nation and first in the OCAA.

The Falcons began the game strong with many solid attacks. A huge kill by Fanshawe's James Jackson put the home team up 17-9 in the first set. The Falcons continued to dominate for the remainder of the set and went on to win by a score of 25-15.

In the second set, Fanshawe had the advantage from the start. The Falcons made the score 7-4 with a kill by Derek Braun. A well-placed tip by Fanshawe's Andre Foreman extended the lead to 15-7 in favour of the home team as the Falcons went on to defeat the Saints in the second set 25-8.

St. Clair battled hard to open the third set, taking a 7-4 lead and forcing Fanshawe to call a timeout. Both teams were exchanging points throughout the set. The Falcons continued to score with strong serving by Sebastian Lethbridge and an amazing block by Braun. Despite St. Clair's best efforts, the Falcons took the final set by a score of 25-20. Jackson and Braun both had 7 kills and 2 blocks in the match.

The Falcons will resume regular season play in the new year, when they will travel to play Sheridan on Sunday, January 10.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team fell to St. Clair College at home on Wednesday evening, three sets to one. The Falcons finished the first half of the season with an 8-3 record.

Fanshawe took an early 6-1 lead in the first set with a pair of nice kills by Renee McCormick, forcing St. Clair to call an early timeout. The Falcons then extended their lead with a service ace by Darian Gropp. St. Clair was unable to recover from the deficit, and Fanshawe took the first set by a score of 25-16.

The Saints started off strong in the second set, taking a 7-5 advantage. St. Clair continued to lead by a few points until late in the set, when the Falcons tied the game at 19. The Saints regained the advantage, and went on to win the set 25-22.

Fanshawe went up 8-5 to start the third set. The Saints then had back-to-back blocks to take a 12-10 lead over the Falcons. St. Clair had the momentum and extended their lead to 18-13, forcing the home team to call a timeout. Unfortunately for Fanshawe, St. Clair kept their momentum and took the third set 25-18.

In the fourth set, the Falcons struggled to contain St. Clair's attack and went down 9-5 early. The Saints held the lead for the majority of the set, going up by a score of 24-18. Fanshawe then went on a 4-0 run to bring the game within two points. That was as close as the Falcons would get as they were unable to complete the comeback and lost the final set 25-22. Top performers for the Falcons were McCormick with 15 points and Carley Nugteren with 14 points.

Fanshawe will play again on Sunday, January 10, when they will travel to take on the Sheridan Bruins.
