MEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

 

The CCAA #1 ranked Fanshawe Men's Volleyball team competed at the OCAA Provincial Championship last weekend in Hamilton, Ontario. At the OCAA Championship banquet on Thursday morning, four members of the Fanshawe Men's Volleyball team were honoured for their play this season. Both James Jackson and Sebastian Lethbridge were named OCAA West Division First Team All-Stars while David Gundrum and David AuCoin were named Second Team All-Stars.

 

On Thursday afternoon, in the opening match of the tournament, the Falcons defeated the George Brown Huskies (11-10) in three straight sets 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20. Fanshawe's Nate Van Camp was named the Player of the Game, finishing the match with 10 kills. The Falcons would move on to play the #9 ranked Durham Lords (18-3) in the semi-final.

 

On Friday night, Fanshawe would take on the Lords. Durham came out on fire, upsetting the Falcons in three sets (25-16, 25-19, 27-25). Fanshawe's Evan Ravn was the Falcons Player of the Game. Fanshawe would head to the Bronze Medal Final versus the #8 ranked Georgian Grizzlies (19-2). Saturday afternoon, the Falcons took on the Grizzlies in the Bronze Medal Final. Fanshawe took care of business in three straight sets 25-20, 25-11 and 25-23 to capture the OCAA Bronze Medal. James Jackson was the Player of the Game for Fanshawe with 21 kills, 3 blocks and an ace. Jackson  was also named a Tournament All-Star.

 

The Falcons will now prepare for the CCAA National Championship, starting on March 9. The Falcons will be playing in the 8pm game on Thursday versus a team TBD.

 

The Fanshawe Falcons are proud to be the host of the 2017 CCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship from March 9-11. Tournament passes are now on sale at the front gate of any Fanshawe Falcons home games, at the Fanshawe Athletics office as well as the Fanshawe Biz Booth.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

 

The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team competed at the OCAA Provincial Championship last weekend at St. Clair College. At the Championship banquet, both Darian Gropp and Lindsay Wilcox were honoured for their exceptional play this season. Gropp was named an OCAA West Division First Team All-Star while Wilcox was named to the All- Rookie Team.

 

On Friday afternoon, the Falcons took on the Durham Lords (20-1). The Lords won the match in three sets   25-11,   25-23   and   25-16. Gropp was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game. After the loss, the Falcons would move to the Consolation side of the bracket and face the Cambrian Golden Shield (10-11) in the semi-final.

 

On Saturday, the Falcons won a marathon game versus the Golden Shield in five sets (24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 20-25, 16-14). Meghan Morelli was named the Falcons Player of the Game, totaling 21 kills, 5 aces, 2 blocks and 12 digs in the match. Fanshawe would face the Algonquin Thunder (16-5) in the Consolation Final.

 

In the Consolation Final on Saturday, the Falcons defeated the Thunder in straight sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) to finish the tournament as Consolation Champions. Madi Shantz was named the Player of the Game for Fanshawe.

 

MEN'S BASKETBALL:

 

Last week the Falcons won both their final league game of the year as well as a Crossover Playoff game which earned them a spot in the OCAA Provincial Championship. The Men have now won five straight games.

 

Last Tuesday, the Falcons were on the road versus the Mohawk Mountaineers (4-12). After being tied at the end of the first quarter, Fanshawe stormed ahead by 12 and led 52-40 at the half. Chris Parker had a big game for the Falcons, scoring 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting as Fanshawe would go on to win the game by a final score of 104-92.

 

On Saturday, the Falcons hosted an OCAA Crossover Playoff game versus the Durham Lords (10-11). In a very close contest, where no team ever led by more than five, the Falcons had a three point lead at the end of the first quarter, 15-12. At halftime, Fanshawe still had a one point lead, 32-31. It remained close the rest of the way but with just 36 seconds left, Parker hit a midrange jumper to give the Falcons a two point lead. After Durham knocked down a pair of clutch free throws to tie the game, Parker hit a fade away three pointer with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock to give Fanshawe the victory, 68-65.

 

With the playoff win, the Falcons will now advance to the OCAA Provincial Championship at Centennial College. The Falcons first round game will take place on Thursday, March 2 at 8pm versus the CCAA #6 ranked George Brown Huskies (19-1).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:

 

After dropping their final league game of the season, Fanshawe won an OCAA Crossover Playoff game and are now headed to the Provincial Championship March 2- 4 at Seneca College.

 

Fanshawe was on the road last Tuesday taking on the CCAA #14 ranked Mohawk Mountaineers (14-4). The Falcons fell behind early and trailed by seven at the end of the first quarter. Fanshawe could never recover, losing the game by a final score of 77-51. Anique Daley and Natalie Warren led all Falcons with 12 points.

 

On Saturday afternoon, Fanshawe hosted an OCAA Crossover Playoff game versus the Georgian Grizzlies (5-13). The Falcons jumped ahead 13-0 to start the game and never looked back. At one point, the Falcons led by 30, as Fanshawe would go on to win by a final score of 62-45. Mikhalia Wright finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the Falcons.

 

The Falcons will now head to Seneca College for the OCAA Provincial Championship starting March 2. Fanshawe will face off against the host Seneca Sting (12-5) in the quarter final at 6pm.
