October 11, 2016

The Fanshawe Men's Baseball team (7-5) went 1-1 last week, splitting their doubleheader with the top ranked St. Clair Saints (11-3).  The Falcons are in fourth place in the OCAA Baseball standings.

On Thursday, the Falcons were on the road at St. Clair, taking on the Saints.  Down 3-1 to start the top of the seventh inning, the Falcons scored one run and then had two men on base with two out.  A key deep fly ball and a pair of St. Clair errors had all three runners score, to give Fanshawe the 5-3 lead.  The Saints were unable to score in the bottom half of the inning, as Fanshawe held on for the win.  Kyle Zimmer (2-1) would get the win for the Falcons. The Saints had previously won 41 consecutive league and playoff games versus OCAA opponents, a streak that started over two years ago.  The Falcons would be held scoreless in game two of the doubleheader, falling by a score of 8-0.  Tyler Rymal (1-2) would take the loss.

Next up, the Falcons take on the Humber Hawks (8-6) on Tuesday evening at Labatt Park.  With the Hawks just in front of the Falcons in the OCAA Baseball standings, playoff positioning is at stake.

In the quarter-finals, Fanshawe defeated the St. Clair Saints 2-0.  Headed to the medal round, the Falcons were the only OCAA team left in the competition.  In the semi-final, Fanshawe fell in a heartbreaker to Western University 1-0 and would face the University of Regina for the bronze medal.  Unfortunately, the Falcons fell by a score of 3-0 and would finish the tournament in fourth place.

The Fanshawe Men's Soccer team (5-1-1) is currently tied for first place in the OCAA West Division standings.  The Falcons lead the division in goals scored with 20.

Fanshawe played host to the St. Clair Saints (5-1-1) last Wednesday evening.  At the half, the Falcons found themselves down 1-0.  Two minutes into the second half, Fanshawe's Robert M'Boko scored on a rebound to tie the game 1-1.  After the goal, St. Clair's goalkeeper received a yellow card immediately followed by a red card and was ejected from the game. The Saints would have to play the rest of the second half with only 10 players.

However, the Saints would manage to score the next two goals of the game and lead 3-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining.  In the 74th minute, M'Boko would close the gap to one on a goal to the top left corner of the net.    After 90 minutes of play, four minutes of extra time were added on and the Falcons would take advantage. After a scramble in front of the Saints goal, M'Boko would slide one past the St. Clair goalkeeper for the hat trick and tie the game for good 3-3.

Fanshawe returns to action on Tuesday, October 11, at home when they take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (3-3-1) at 4:30pm. Last time these teams met on September 17, Mohawk handed the Falcons their only loss of the season by a score of 3-1.

On Tuesday evening, the Falcons hosted the St. Clair Saints. Fanshawe would open the scoring in the sixth minute. With two St. Clair defenders covering Fanshawe's Jade Kovacevic, the Falcons striker would find a wide open Alexandria Peat, who would bury the ball past the Saints goalkeeper, giving Fanshawe the early 1-0 lead.   The Falcons would hold the one goal lead until the 50th minute, when the Saints would tie the game.  In a matter of three minutes, St. Clair would score two more goals and take a 3-1 lead.  Fanshawe kept attacking and in the 60th minute, would close the gap to one on a goal by Sheree Uyl. The Falcons weren't done yet and just three minutes later, after a great through ball by Selena Roberts, Kovacevic tied the game 3-3. St. Clair would score again, giving the Saints a 4-3 lead but in the 75th minute, for the second time in the match, Kovacevic would break away past the Saints defenders and tie the game. In extra time, Kovacevic would be awarded a penalty kick after being taken down in the box.  She would score her third goal of the game and Fanshawe would go on to win by a final score of 5-4.
