MEN'S BASEBALL:

The Fanshawe Men's Baseball team came home with the OCAA silver medal this past weekend, after finishing 2-2 at the OCAA Provincial Championship.  This is the second consecutive OCAA second place finish for the Falcons.

On Thursday night at the OCAA Men's Baseball Championship banquet, Fanshawe's Quinton Twohey was named the 2016 OCAA Men's Baseball Player of the Year.  This is the first time that a Fanshawe player has received this honour.  Other award winners for Fanshawe included Robert Doyle who was named the OCAA Men's Baseball Rookie of the Year, as well as Carlos Arteaja and Travis Helps, who were both named OCAA League All-Stars.

On Saturday, in the first game of the OCAA Provincial Championship, Fanshawe and Humber squared off at Connorvale Park.  After two scoreless innings, the Falcons scored four runs in the third including a bases-clearing double by Travis Helps to take a 4-0 lead.  Unfortunately, Humber came back with four runs in the fifth inning and then the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to take the lead.  The Hawks won the game by a final score of 5-4.  Fanshawe's Kyle Zimmer took the loss for the Falcons and Helps was named the Falcons Player of the Game.

Fanshawe then took on the Durham Lords in a win or go home game.  Again, after two scoreless innings, Fanshawe had the lead, this time putting up three runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  The Falcons continued to hit the ball well and led 8-0 after six innings.  All nine members of the Falcons starting lineup had at least one hit, as Fanshawe went on to win by a final score of 8-2.   Tyler Rymal picked up the win, pitching the complete game for the Falcons, as well as getting Player of the Game honours.

On Sunday, Fanshawe again played the Humber Hawks, this time in the Bronze Medal Game, with the winner advancing to the Championship Final.  The Falcons wasted no time, scoring two runs in the first inning of play.  After giving up a single run to the Hawks, Fanshawe scored eight more runs in the next three innings to take a commanding 10-1 lead.  The Falcons tacked on another run in the sixth inning and finish the game 11-1 in just six innings.  Robert Doyle got the win for the Falcons and Quinton Twohey was named Player of the Game for Fanshawe.  The Falcons moved on to the Championship Final.

In the Final, Fanshawe faced the three-time defending champion St. Clair Saints.  The Saints led 4-1 heading into the fifth inning, when the Falcons began to chip away.  Fanshawe scored three runs in the

inning to tie the game with just one out but left runners on second and third.  St. Clair scored one in the bottom half of the inning and then two more in the sixth, and eventually won the game 7-4.  Fanshawe's Hayden Regnier was named the Falcons Player of the Game. For their outstanding play for the entire tournament, both Twohey and Zev Weisdorf were named Tournament All-Stars. Fanshawe will now prepare themselves for the inaugural Canadian College Baseball National Invitational Championship October 27 to 29.  The Falcons will face the Holland Hurricanes in their first game of the Championship on Thursday at 7pm.
