The Fanshawe Men's Volleyball team, who is ranked #5 nationally, went 2-0 last week, bringing them into the holiday break undefeated.

On Thursday evening, the Falcons defeated Mohawk on the road in three straight sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-16). Leading the way for Fanshawe was London native, Cole Jordan, who had 12 points and Mike Liscumb (Ilderton, ON) with 10.

On Saturday night at home, the Falcons defeated the Conestoga Condors 3-1. The teams traded points to begin the match, until Jordan gave the Falcons the 8-6 lead on back-to-back kills. Conestoga then went on a run of their own to take a one-point lead, 9-8. However, that advantage would be short lived. Great offense by the Falcons put them back on top, with kills from Jacob Scobie (Hamilton, ON) and Jacob Kloosterhof (South Hampton, ON). The Condors would stay within reach with a few hits of their own, however Fanshawe held on and took the first set 25-23.

The Falcons went up 7-3 to open the second set. A massive kill by Liscumb got the crowd on their feet. Another hit from Jordan and a block by David Gundrum (Port Elgin, ON) extended Fanshawe's lead to 13-7. The Falcons continued to win the battle at the net, with two blocks from Liscumb. Fanshawe won the second set on a Scobie block, by a score of 25-13.

The Falcons would use their momentum from the second set to take a 3-0 lead to start the third set. A strong left-side kill by Will Otten, followed by yet another Liscumb block resulted in two more points for the home team. Conestoga came back to tie the set at 7 and would continue to pressure the Falcons. A service ace by Gundrum gave the Falcons a slim two-point advantage, 15-13. However, the Condors would stick with Fanshawe and took a 19-18 lead. The Falcons were unable to recover, and Conestoga won the third set 27-25.

Fanshawe stepped up their game in the fourth set, taking a commanding 11-4 lead with Liscumb's fifth block of the night. The Falcons extended their lead to 18-7 with a massive Jordan kill. Fanshawe continued their strong attack and would be too much for the Condors to handle, as the home

team won the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1. Jordan recorded 21 kills and 2 aces, while Liscumb added 6 kills and 5 blocks.

Fanshawe will return to league action in 2018, when they host Redeemer on January 18 at 8pm.

The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball squad, who is ranked #14 in the CCAA, is on a seven game winning streak after two shutout wins last week.

In Hamilton on Thursday, the Falcons defeated Mohawk 25-20, 25-23 and 25-18. Local standouts Shannon and Meghan Morelli led Fanshawe with 15 and 12 points respectively.

At home on Saturday, the Falcons swept Conestoga 3-0. The Condors started strong in the first set, taking a 12-9 lead over the Falcons. Fanshawe regrouped with three straight service aces by Shannon Morelli that helped the home team to a 17-15 lead. A Tarea Heshka (Erin, ON) ace and Lynda McArdle (London, ON) kill extended the Falcons lead and Fanshawe went on to take the first set 25-18.

Conestoga began the second set executing very well offensively and went up 12-8.  An excellent kill by Meghan Morelli gave the Falcons a quick spark, however the Condors would not let up and stretched their lead to 17-11. Fanshawe then stepped up their defense and went on a late run. Kills from Renee McCormick (Waterloo, ON) and Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) cut the Condors lead to 24-22. Then, a well-placed tip by Meghan Morelli, followed by a Stewart ace tied the game at 24. The Falcons completed the comeback, ending the exciting second set on a 7-0 run to win 26-24.

The two teams traded points to begin the third set. Shannon Morelli would excite the home crowd with a massive kill to give the red and white a 7-6 advantage. A nice tip by Darian Gropp (Kitchener, ON) kept the Falcons rolling. Stewart then had a great dig that resulted in another Fanshawe point to extend their lead to 16-11. A huge block by Kim Hardy (Melbourne, ON) sealed the deal, as the Falcons went on to win the final set 25-18. Shannon Morelli and Heshka both had 9 points in the match for the Falcons.

Fanshawe's next league game will be on January 18 at home against the Redeemer Royals at 6pm.
