School of Building Technology named Donald J. Smith School of Building Technology.

At a celebration today, the family of the late Don Smith pledged their support of Fanshawe College by announcing the naming of the School of Building Technology to the Donald J. Smith School of Building Technology.  This generous donation by the Smith family is valued at $1 million.

As a founding partner of EllisDon, Don Smith established an amazing company and legacy. His family ties with Fanshawe ran deep. Don served as chair of Fanshawe's first capital campaign and was the first recipient of a Fanshawe College honorary diploma in 1992. He also hired graduates from the building technology programs and encouraged volunteer involvement with the College. Don and Joan Smith's commitment to the College continued when they served as honorary co-chairs for Fanshawe's second capital campaign, successfully completing a $15 million campaign in 2008. Fanshawe College presented Joan Smith with an honorary diploma in 2008.

“I am so pleased to make this special announcement on behalf of my mother and our family.  We are delighted to be recognizing our father with the naming of the Donald J. Smith School of Building Technology at Fanshawe,” said Donald R. Smith. “Our dad (Don Smith) was always committed to assisting young students pursue their educational goals. EllisDon also benefited as many of Fanshawe graduates joined our company and quickly moved into management positions. They were very much part of the team who have elevated EllisDon into a world class construction company. It is our hope that this gift recognizes our dad's vision in a tangible way.”

“The Donald J. Smith School of Building Technology associates Fanshawe College with one of Canada's most prominent names in the construction industry,” said Fanshawe President Peter Devlin. “We are extremely proud to name our school in recognition of Don Smith and we thank the Smith family for their continued support of Fanshawe.”

Fanshawe College is in the midst of a $100 million “Remarkable” campaign, securing support for four priority projects.
