New scholarship offered each semester to an international student.
Fanshawe and Scotiabank celebrated the creation of a new scholarship during a donor recognition event held September 29 at the Centre for Digital and Performance Arts in downtown London.
The Scotiabank International Leadership Scholarship, made possible by a $300,000 contribution to Remarkable! The Campaign for Fanshawe College, will be offered each semester to an international student who demonstrates academic achievement and involvement in student life and the local community.
The inaugural recipient, Ronan Mao, is a third-year Civil Engineering Technology co-op student from China. Mao has managed to maintain a cumulative 3.9 grade point average while volunteering to deliver food to low-income households and help newly-arrived international students get to know London.
“Coming to Canada to pursue my education, and my future, has been very rewarding,” said Mao, who expects to graduate next year. “This generous support is an unexpected and heartwarming reward for my hard work. I can promise you that future students who receive this scholarship will feel the same.”
Scotiabank has been a significant contributor to Fanshawe for over two decades, said Michael Reid, director of Scotiabank's credit solutions group. “Over the years, we've seen Fanshawe expand its footprint, offering facilities and programs which make their graduates among the most sought after in the marketplace,” he said.
Fanshawe's President, Peter Devlin, said the scholarships will help the College attract many bright and talented international students to Fanshawe. “This is an exciting day for Fanshawe. It is support from partners like Scotiabank that helps drive our mission forward of providing pathways to success, an exceptional learning experience and a global outlook to meet student and employer needs,” he said. “In the years to come, this scholarship will help shine a light on how we at Fanshawe embrace cultural diversity. We will all benefit from the global talent that comes to study at Fanshawe.”
