Students living in residence at Fanshawe this September will be required to have at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Fanshawe College is committed to providing a safe, enriched Residence experience this fall. To make that possible, the College has adopted a vaccination requirement for residents under the guidance of the Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU).
All students living in Residence will be required to show proof they have received at least a first dose of a Canadian approved COVID-19 vaccine. Students will also be expected to have a second dose scheduled within the recommended timeframe for that vaccine.
"Providing an enriched residence living experience is a top priority for the Fanshawe Residence experience this fall, and that requires measures to protect ourselves and our student community to the fullest extent we can," says David Norwood, Director Residence Operations, Fanshawe Residence. "Health officials have told us that vaccines are the best way to provide an environment for that to happen."
If students are unable to get a COVID-19 vaccine in their home community, Fanshawe will assist with scheduling a vaccination appointment upon arrival. Unvaccinated students will be expected to have their first dose within 14 days of arriving at Residence and will receive details about restrictions and accommodations until their appointment.
Students who cannot be vaccinated due to medical accommodations or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code may request an exemption. Residence Staff will communicate with students about the outcomes of exemption requests and options available. Approved exemptions may impose restrictions on access, activities or room occupancy.
Students who are partially or fully vaccinated at least 14 days before move-in will enjoy use of Residence lounges and common spaces, in-person social activities and visiting between Residence buildings.
"We're excited to make it possible for new students to experience enriched opportunities within our Fanshawe Residences once again," Norwood says. "We look forward to a safe and enjoyable fall term!"
Fanshawe will not require students or staff to show proof of vaccination before coming to campus for in-person labs, classes or services. However, the College strongly encourages everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
