Fanshawe College will host the inaugural Girls Technology Camp.

From August 11 to 15, Fanshawe College will host more than 20 girls in grades five to eight from across London for the inaugural Girls Technology Camp, a hands-on introduction into the technology field.

Date:              Monday, August 11 to Friday, August 15, 2014;
Time:             9:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location:      Fanshawe College, 1001 Fanshawe College Boulevard (please see campus map for building locations).

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of interactive workshops in construction, electronics, manufacturing, science and transportation. Activities include:

Monday, August 11

  • Compression and tension forces on bridges (1:15 p.m. in C1007) — students will learn about building bridges and testing its tension.
  • Build a birdhouse (1:15 p.m. in B1001) — students will begin building their own birdhouse.

Tuesday, August 12

  • Extracting DNA (9:15 a.m. in D3014) — students will learn how to extract DNA while working in one of Fanshawe's science labs.
  • Electrical lab (9:15 a.m. in B1007) — students will build a circuit board and learn trouble shooting techniques.

Wednesday, August 13

  • Building robots (9:15 a.m. in B1009) — students will build their own small robots that will be theirs to keep.

Thursday, August 14

  • Build a birdhouse (9:15 a.m. in B1001) — students will finish building and begin painting their birdhouses.
  • Extracting DNA (1:15 p.m. in D3014) — students will learn how to extract DNA while working in one of Fanshawe's science labs.
  • Compression and tension forces on bridges (1:15 p.m. in C1007) — students will learn about building bridges and testing its tension.

Friday, August 15

  • Metal jewelry making (9:15 a.m. in B1016) — using hand tools and a jig, students will bend and shape materials to create their own jewelry.
  • Changing tires (1:15 p.m. in T1028) — students will learn how to change their own car tires.
  • Scaffold climb, Paint Simulator, Bird House and Truss pick up (1:15 p.m. in T1028).

The Girls Technology Camp was one of the successful pitches chosen from Fanshawe's Den, a corporate take on the popular Dragon's Den concept. Last spring, Fanshawe College employees were asked to submit their innovative ideas to incorporate the College's new values into its ongoing business operations.
