On May 17, 2017, Fanshawe will host its inaugural Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Day, an opportunity to introduce 500 London and region high school students to potential careers in the trades.
The event will feature engaging activities and demonstrations led by faculty and current students in the four skilled trades and apprenticeship sectors offered at the College: construction, industrial, motive power and service (e.g., horticulture, cooking, hair stylist).
Among the 50 student volunteers will be one of Fanshawe's record nine medal winners from the 2017 Skills Ontario, Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition held May 1 to 3, 2017 in Toronto.
Fanshawe's four gold medal winners – Matthew Shaw, Architectural Technology & Design; Dan Ryan, Carpentry; David Van Andel, Plumbing; and Owen Fryer, Sheet Metal – will represent the College at the Skills Canada National Competition, held May 31 to June 3, 2017 in Winnipeg, MB.
"This is a great opportunity for our guests to explore, ask questions and get hands-on experience with a wide variety of trades," says Vertha Coligan, Dean of Faculty of Technology and Academic Services. "Hopefully, the experience will spark an interest that will ultimately grow into a rewarding career."
