On April 27, 2017, Fanshawe's School of Information Technology will host the ninth annual Girls Rock IT, an interactive and fun event introducing 200 girls in grades 7 and 8 to a wide variety of potential careers in the field.
The event, sponsored by TD Bank, features a mix of games and hands-on workshops covering topics like coding, hacking, hardware, networking, and unlocking creativity, including:
- Alice in Codeland: quickly creating animated characters in your own virtual world;
- Hard Wired: reducing a computer to a pile of boards and wires, fixing common problems, upgrading components and putting it all back together again;
- Photoshop - Wow!: learning how professionals use Adobe Photoshop to add filters and give photos awesome effects.
There will also be a networking lunch during which the girls can speak with women currently enjoying careers in the IT field.
"Our goal is to introduce and promote challenging and exciting careers that girls may not have traditionally considered,” says Marg Medeiros, co-operative education consultant in Fanshawe's Employment and Student Entrepreneurial Services department, who has supported the event throughout its nine-year run. “This is an opportunity to spark personal interests, meet women role models in IT and, perhaps, discover new career paths."
