(London, Ontario) – On Sunday afternoon in Oshawa, Ontario, the Fanshawe Falcons defeated the St. Clair Saints by a final score of 2-1 in the National College Baseball Championship Final and were crowned 2016 National Champions. This is the first National gold medal in the Program's brief three year history and marks the first time a Fanshawe league sport has won a National Championship in 35 years (Men's Basketball, 1980-81).

The Falcons had an outstanding championship, finishing the tournament with a record of 4-1. In round robin play, the Falcons lost their opening game of the tournament to the Saints 10-2. Fanshawe rebounded to win their next two games, 7-5 over the Humber Hawks and then 2-1 over the Holland Hurricanes from PEI. In the semi-final, Fanshawe battled the host Durham Lords. The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning which was more than enough for Fanshawe's starting pitcher Kyle Zimmer (London, ON), who notched the win with a complete game victory. Fanshawe won the game 5-0 and headed to the final versus St. Clair. In the final, the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second inning but Fanshawe came back in the top of the third, scoring two runs on four singles to take the lead. Fanshawe's defense would come up big in the second half of the game, with a number of phenomenal plays to keep the one run advantage. Fanshawe's Bryan Hames (Waterdown, ON) was the winning pitcher for the Falcons, with Robert Doyle (London, ON) coming in for the two inning save, as Fanshawe won the game 2-1.

Fanshawe's Hames was named the Championship MVP while shortstop Carlos Arteaga (London, ON) was the Gold Glove winner. The Falcons had four members named to the All-Tournament Team including Hames, Zimmer, second baseman Zev Weisdorf (London, ON) and outfielder Tyler Wood (Niagara Falls, ON).

“I told our guys that they needed to believe in themselves, believe in our team and believe that all the hard work we put in this season would pay off,” said Head Coach Brian Harvey. “I could not be more proud of our guys. They played fantastic baseball all weekend and best of all, they played as a team.”

After the game, Captain Cody Merner (Zurich, ON) commented on the win. “I'm speechless.  The boys came together as a family and defied all odds.  I am super proud of everyone who stepped onto the field today.  This is a moment we will all hold onto forever.”
