(London, Ontario) – On Thursday evening in Victoria, British Columbia, the Fanshawe Men's Volleyball team defeated the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners, 3-2 in their quarterfinal match at the CCAA National Championship.

The Falcons dropped the first set in a tight 26-24 contest. They would quickly regroup however and go up 5-0 to open the second set. Fanshawe was able to maintain that lead throughout the second set with great serving from Zach Albert (Brampton, ON) and went on to win 25-16.

The third set saw the Mariners get on the board first, but Fanshawe would go on a run of their own that was sparked by a block from middle Mike Liscumb (Ilderton, ON). The Falcons maintained that momentum and took a 2-1 set lead, claiming the third by a score of 25-19.

VIU came out strong in the fourth set and had a four point lead late in the set. A kill by Sam Otten (Delaware, ON) got the Falcons going and the birds were able to tie the score at 22. Unfortunately, the Mariners were able to hang on and take a 25-23 win to force a fifth and deciding set.

Will Otten (Delaware, ON) opened the scoring for Fanshawe in the final set with a right side attack. The Falcons took a 12-8 advantage after a long rally that resulted in a Fanshawe point. The Falcons would finish the match on a kill from Liscumb to take the set 15-10, and the match 3-2. CCAA All-Canadian, Cole Jordan (London, ON) was named player of the match for Fanshawe, recording 15 points. Fanshawe Head Coach Patrick Johnston commented, “VIU were a very tough opponent that made great adjustments mid-match but the guys gutted it out when it got tight and finished the job”.

The Falcons will face the Géants de Saint-Jean from Quebec in the CCAA semi-final match on Friday at 9:00pm EST (6:00pm PST). Saint-Jean defeated SAIT of Alberta in three straight sets in their quarterfinal.
