(London, Ontario) – On Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre, the #11 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (18-3, 2nd in West) defeated the Algonquin Thunder (7-11, 7th in East) by a score of 86-60 to punch their ticket to the OCAA Provincial Championship.
Fanshawe got off to a slow start, as Algonquin took a 7-2 advantage. However, the Thunder's lead would be short lived, as the Falcons then stepped it up and went on a 14-0 run. Fanshawe point guard Claire Dechet (Sarnia, ON) found Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) on a back door cut to get the Falcons ahead. The home team also increased their defensive pressure that resulted in a Chuot Angou (London, ON) steal and layup to give the Falcons momentum. Fanshawe had back-to-back triples from Kaleigh Morris (London, ON) to send the red and white into the locker room with a commanding 51-23 half time lead.
In the third quarter, Fanshawe came out running, getting fast break points from Ali Vlasman (Mount Elgin, ON) and Haly Hawkins (London, ON). Wright then added a steal and layup of her own to extend the lead. In the final frame, the Thunder outscored the Falcons 19-14, however the deficit was too much to overcome. Fanshawe went on to win the game 86-60. The Falcons outrebounded the Thunder 52-30 and recorded an impressive 25 assists and 25 steals as a team. Angou had a game-high seven steals in only 15 minutes of play.
