(London, Ontario) – On Thursday evening, the Fanshawe Men's Soccer team (3-1) defeated the Lambton Lions (1-2) by a final score of 2-1.
Both teams came out firing with a number of shots on goal early in the game. In the 5th minute, Fanshawe's Elivir Gigolaj opened the scoring to put the Falcons up one. Lambton came right back two minutes later to tie the game. In the 24th minute, after a great run, Falcons defender Bradley Heath was taken down in the Lambton box and Fanshawe was awarded a penalty kick. Gigolaj stepped up and buried one into the bottom corner, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead. At the half, the game remained 2-1 in favour of the Falcons, with Fanshawe leading the shots attempted 14-7.
The start of the second half was very intense, with both teams picking up early yellow cards for their physical play. The best chance to score in the second half came after a scramble in front of the Falcons goal. In the 65th minute, after denying the Lions attack, Fanshawe countered and Gigolaj sent a rocket to the net over the head of the goalkeeper but hit the cross bar. In the end, the two goals Fanshawe scored were all the Falcons needed to win the game by a final score of 2-1.
Fanshawe returns to the field on Saturday, September 24, to the Fanshawe Soccer Fields when they take on the Redeemer Royals (1-2).
