(London, Ontario) – On Saturday evening, the Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (12-6) defeated the Seneca Sting (11-9) in four sets (25-19, 25-22, 13-25, 25-18).  With the win, Fanshawe has now earned a spot in the OCAA Provincial Championships being held February 25-27 at Canadore College in North Bay.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 4-2 lead on a pair of backrow attacks from Carley Nugteren.  Seneca kept the game close but Fanshawe's attack kept them ahead, earning 13 of their first 15 points.  The Sting were within two, 17-15, before Darian Gropp served an ace and Seneca was forced to call a timeout.  The Falcons finished the game on a 9-4 run and took the set 25-19.  Nugteren finished the first set with eight points, including seven kills.

Seneca scored the first three points of the second set but the Falcons came right back and tied the game at three on an ace by Allysha Couch. With the game tied at 10, Couch had a huge block and the Falcons regained the lead.  The Falcons were up 21-15 but Seneca wasn't done, scoring the next four points to close the gap to two.  A kill by Kristen Bond sealed the deal as Fanshawe won the set 25-22.

In the third set, Seneca again led early on.  With the score 12-4 in favour of the Sting, Fanshawe took a timeout.  After the timeout, a huge kill by Nugteren gave some life to the Falcons, but Fanshawe could not recover as Seneca would pull away and win the set 25-13.

The Falcons got right back on track with a big block to start the fourth set.  With the game tied at 13, a block by Seneca gave them their first lead of the set. Nugteren came right back with a backrow kill for Fanshawe to tie the game.  The Falcons took a two point lead on yet another Nugteren kill and the Sting called a timeout.  Fanshawe went on to win the set 25-18 and win the match, 3 sets to 1. Nugteren finished with her season high in points with 22.
