(London, Ontario) – On Wednesday night in a battle of two of the top ranked Women's Basketball teams in the CCAA, the #10 ranked Fanshawe Falcons (9-3) defeated the #14 ranked St. Clair Saints (8-3) by a final score of 65-58. Fanshawe swept the season series versus the Saints and is now ranked second in the OCAA West Division.
Defence was the story of the first quarter with the score just 6-4 for Fanshawe after five minutes of play. A three-point basket by Jacoby Sanchez put the Falcons up by five but a 6-0 run by the Saints gave them their first lead of the game. The Saints lead didn't last long as the Falcons scored five straight to take a 14-10 lead. Fanshawe finished the quarter on a 7-1 run and led 16-11 after one quarter of play. Fanshawe continued to push, scoring the first six points of the second, extending their lead to double digits, 22-11. The Falcons defence continued to shine, holding the Saints to just four points with two minutes to play in the half. However, the Saints exploded for seven points in the final two minutes of the half, cutting the Falcons lead to just two points, 24-22, at the break. Fanshawe's Natalie Warren led the way with 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Mikhaila Wright started the third quarter off with a steal and a basket to get the Falcons right back on track. Five straight points gave the Falcons the 29-22 lead. With the Falcons up by six, back to back three-point baskets by St. Clair tied the game at 37. After the Saints took a 39-37 lead, Fanshawe's Sanchez made a runner in the lane to tie the game at the end of three quarters. The Saints started the fourth on a 6-2 run, but the Falcons wouldn't break. Laura Vere made four consecutive free throws and with five minutes remaining, the game was once again tied. Vere then set up her teammates with a pair of nice assists to give the Falcons a four point lead, 51-47, with four minutes remaining. The Falcons were on an impressive 16-2 run with one minute remaining before St. Clair's Sarah Bondy made it interesting, knocking down three three-point baskets in just 40 seconds, cutting the lead to just five. Fanshawe closed out the game and won by a final score of 65-58.

Fanshawe will play again on Saturday, January 23, when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-3). The game starts at 5pm at the Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre and will be a part of Fanshawe Athletics annual Falcons Fest quadruple header.
