(London, Ontario) – On Saturday night, the #10 ranked Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (9-4) were defeated by the Mohawk Mountaineers (9-3) by a final score of 61-50. With the loss, the Falcons find themselves in a tie for second place in the OCAA West Division.

Both teams started the first quarter taking the ball inside the paint.  With the score tied 4-4, Mohawk moved outside and hit a pair of jumpers including a three pointer by Stef Hrymak to give Mohawk the five point lead.  Fanshawe's Mikhalia Wright knocked down a three of her own to pull the Falcons within two. The Mountaineers couldn't miss as JenJen Abella of Mohawk hit three three-pointers in the quarter and led 24-13 after the first.  After three minutes had gone by in the second quarter, neither team had scored.  Wright finally put the Falcons on the board, dribbling around the Mohawk defence for the easy layup to cut the lead to single digits. Both teams defence stepped up, forcing the opposing team into difficult shots. The Falcons held Mohawk to just five points in the quarter but found themselves down by eight, 29-21, at the half.  Anique Daley led the Falcons in scoring with 6 points.

Laura Vere started the third quarter with a big three pointer from the corner to cut the lead to five.  Mohawk took advantage inside, grabbing a number of offensive rebounds and putting them back up for the score. Mohawk led by as many as 13 in the quarter but Fanshawe battled back and with one minute left in the third, Fanshawe found themselves only down by six.  The Mountaineers hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds of the quarter and led the Falcons 45-36 with one quarter to play.  Early in the fourth, momentum seemed to shift in Fanshawe's favour as Wright scored another five straight for the Falcons but with five minutes left in the game, Fanshawe still found themselves down by 10.  The Falcons tried to comeback but couldn't get any closer than six, eventually losing by a final score of 61-50.
