(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Soccer team opened their home schedule on Saturday with a convincing 10-1 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers (0-2-0). With the win, Fanshawe moves to 3-0-0 on the season, putting them in first place in the OCAA West Division.
Fanshawe was in control right from the start of the game, with a number of early chances to score. In the 22nd minute, Jade Kovacevic buried one into the back of the net for Fanshawe. Just 3 minutes later, Kovacevic scored again from a beautiful touch pass by Niki McDonald. In the 30th minute, Marisa Oliveira scored from the top of the 18 yard box to give the Falcons a commanding 3-0 lead. In the 39th minute, Kovacevic scored for the third time and at the half, the Falcons led 4-0. Fanshawe held Mohawk to just one shot on goal at the break.
Kovacevic continued where she left off in the first half and in the 49th minute, put in her fourth goal of the game off a pass from Oliveira. Four minutes later, Danielle Austin added a goal to make it 6-0 for the home team. Fanshawe controlled the tempo for the majority of the second half and Fanshawe defender Emily Mitchell recorded her first career goal in minute 61. Kovacevic then shot a rocket to the bottom left corner to tie the Fanshawe College record of most goals scored in a game with 5. Both Aylien Wattell and Breanna Sundberg added goals before Mohawk got on the board in the 90th minute. The final score was 10-1 in favour of the Falcons, setting the record for most goals in a game in Fanshawe Women's Soccer history.
The Falcons next game will be at home on Saturday, September 26 at 12pm versus Conestoga College (0-2-0). This will be the second time this season that the two teams will meet, the first time being on September 14 in Kitchener, where the Falcons won 4-0.
