(London, Ontario) – On Friday night in a playoff type atmosphere, two of the top teams in the OCAA collided as the Fanshawe Women's Basketball team (5-3) fell to the #8 CCAA ranked Mohawk Mountaineers (6-1) by a final score of 79-63.  Fanshawe is currently tied for third in the OCAA West Division with 10 points.

 

In a fast paced opening quarter, the Mountaineers hit a three pointer to open the scoring but Fanshawe's Laura Vere hit one of her own on the next possession to tie the game. Over the next five minutes, Mohawk went on a 13-7 run and took a 16-10 lead with a minute left in the quarter.  After a Fanshawe timeout, the Falcons scored four straight to close out the first, only trailing Mohawk by two, 16-14.  Fanshawe tied the game at 16 at the start of the second on a jump hook by Natalie Warren. Mohawk pulled ahead by five but back-to-back layups by Vere closed the gap to one.  With 3:30 left in the half, Fanshawe's Ali Vlasman knocked down a free throw to tie the game 26-26.  Unfortunately, Mohawk finished the quarter on a 10-6 run and led 36-32 at halftime.  Fanshawe's Anique Daley went 5 for 6 from the line and had nine points in the half.

 

Mohawk started the third on a 5-1 run, extending their lead to eight.  The Falcons battled right back with baskets in the lane by Vlasman and Kaleigh Morris.  With two minutes left in the quarter, Fanshawe trailed by nine but finished the quarter on their own 6-1 run, and were once again only down by four.  In the fourth, both teams traded baskets early but the Mountaineers continued to hold the lead.  Halfway through the fourth, Mohawk led by nine, 69-60, and the Falcons called a timeout.  Fanshawe was outscored 25-13 in the fourth quarter as the Mountaineers when on to win the game by a final score of 79-63.  Warren had her second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Wright led all Falcons in scoring with 14 points.

Mikhalia Wright – 14 points, 6 rebounds

Natalie Warren – 11 points, 12 rebounds

 

Mohawk's Top Performers:

Sam Pocrnic – 16 points

Jasmina Kucic – 14 points, 7 rebounds

 

Fanshawe returns to action on Wednesday, November 30, when they travel to Welland, Ontario to take on the Niagara Knights (5-2).
