(London, Ontario) – On Friday night, the Fanshawe Women's Softball team (15-5) defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-13) by scores of 11-1 (5 innings) and 9-3. With the wins and just four games remaining in the regular season, the Falcons have clinched a spot in the OCAA Provincial Championship Oct. 20-22, hosted by Conestoga College.
In game one, Mohawk scored one run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons hit three singles in the bottom of the first but no runs would score. In the second, Alanna Gilmour (7-1) would strike out the side looking but in the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons still couldn't come away with a run after another two singles. In the bottom of the third, after a leadoff single and a bunt, Jacey Lochert tied the game 1-1 and then MacKenzie Kelly hit a double to give the Falcons the lead. Fanshawe would tack on another two runs and pull ahead 4-1. In the top of the fourth, Gilmour would strike out the side again. In the bottom half, after the leadoff batter ended up on third base, Dotzert hit a two run homerun to give Fanshawe the 6-1 lead. The Falcons would score another five runs in the inning, batting through the order and take a commanding 11-1 lead. Gilmour would get through the top of the fifth and take the win 11-1 in just five innings.
In game two of the doubleheader, Mohawk would once again score a run in the first inning. This time, the Falcons would respond in the bottom half, scoring a run of their own after a triple by Dotzert and an RBI single by Reannah Hogarth-McLean. After a quick top of the second inning, a leadoff double by Carlene Clapperton would come around to score on a double by Amber Preszcator to give Fanshawe the 2-1 lead. Dotzert would single home another run and the Falcons would take a 3-1 after two innings of play. In the bottom of fourth, an RBI double by Tori Piper was followed up with an RBI triple by Dotzert, giving Fanshawe the 5-1 lead. In the sixth, Mohawk came back with two runs on two hits but the Falcons got out of the inning still up by two. A two run homerun by Preszcator pushed the Falcons lead back to four. Fanshawe would cash in two more runs and go on to win by a final score of 9-3. Fanshawe's Lydia Kalbfleisch (3-3) would be the winning pitcher.
Fanshawe is on the road on Sunday, October 16, when they travel to Etobicoke, Ontario to take on the Humber Hawks (12-8). The games are at 1pm and 3pm.
