(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Basketball squad (12-2) defeated the #10 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers (13-2) by a score of 69-56 on Saturday evening at Fanshawe Athletics Falcons Fest event. The Falcons protected the nest yet again, as they have won every home contest so far this season.
Fanshawe started the game strong defensively, holding Mohawk to only eight first quarter points. Second year guard Claire Dechet (Sarnia, ON) scored five straight points to get the Falcons rolling offensively. Mikhaila Wright (London, ON) then recorded her 90th career 3-pointer, making her Fanshawe Women's Basketball all-time leader in triples made. The Falcons continued to move the ball and run the floor and had a 19-8 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Fanshawe ran into foul trouble and the Mountaineers took advantage, outscoring the Falcons 23-9 to take a 31-28 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, Fanshawe scored the first six points of the third quarter to retake the lead. The Falcons got points off the fast break from Ali Vlasman (Mount Elgin, ON), who leads the OCAA in field goal percentage. The teams exchanged buckets throughout and were tied at 47 after the third quarter. In the final frame, the red and white stepped up their defense yet again. Chuot Angou (London, ON) and Wright both had steals that resulted in the Falcons going up nine, 60-51. The Mountaineers fought back, cutting the lead to six before Sydney Kendellen (London, ON) hit a shot clock buzzer beater to stop the Mohawk run. Fanshawe then extended their lead on opportunities off of huge offensive rebounds from Maddy Kielar (Newmarket, ON) and Kaleigh Morris (London, ON). The Falcons outscored the Mountaineers 22-9 in the final quarter and went on to win the game 69-56. The win marks Head Coach Bill Carriere's 150th career win.
