Falcons Women's Volleyball Clinches Second Place in OCAA West Division

(London, Ontario) – In a loud and proud Glenn Johnston Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon, the Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (14-3) clinched second place in the OCAA West Division with a 3-1 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers (10-7).

Fanshawe had a pair of kills from Meghan Morelli (London, ON) to open the Falcons scoring. The teams then traded points until Mohawk went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. Fanshawe regrouped and got points from Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) and Mattea Deleary (Ridgetown, ON) to cut Mohawk's lead to one, 17-16. A service ace from Falcons fifth year Darian Gropp (Kitchener, ON) then gave the home team a 19-18 advantage.  A huge set point kill by Stewart excited the home crowd as the Falcons won the first set 25-22.

Fanshawe rookie Ainsley Acton (Lucan, ON) gave the red and white an early lead in the second set with a well-placed tip. However, the Mountaineers responded and midway through the set led the Falcons 14-11. Mohawk stretched their lead and Fanshawe was unable to recover from the deficit, falling 25-19.

In the third frame, a kill from Deleary, followed by a massive block from Meghan Morelli gave the Falcons momentum. The birds extended their lead to 16-12 with a Gropp point, but the Mountaineers chipped away and cut the lead to one, 17-16. Kills from Gropp and Meghan Morelli gave the Falcons control again, and Fanshawe went on to win the third set 25-21.

The fourth set started with strong serving by the Falcons, giving them a 5-1 lead. A right side kill from Stewart got the crowd on their feet and extended Fanshawe's lead to 13-7. The home team used that momentum and yet another Meghan Morelli kill to give the Falcons a 20-14 advantage. Fanshawe held on to that lead to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
