(London, Ontario) – On Wednesday evening, the #14 CCAA ranked Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team (8-1) protected their second place standing in the OCAA West Division with a 3-2 victory over the St. Clair Saints (6-3).
The Falcons started the first set on a 5-1 run, with a tip and a block by last week's OCAA Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week, Shannon Morelli (London, ON). The Saints made a run of their own to cut the lead to two, but a kill by Fanshawe rookie Ainsley Acton (Lucan, ON) would end that run. St. Clair would stick with the Falcons and tie the game 21-21 and after a long rally, the Saints would take the lead. Fanshawe could not recover and fell in the first set 25-23.
It was an evenly matched second set as the teams traded points. The Falcons had a kill from Mattea Deleary (Ridgetown, ON) that excited the home crowd. St. Clair continued to pressure Fanshawe, and held a 15-13 lead midway through the set. A service ace by Meghan Morelli (London, ON) tied the game at 17. Back-to-back kills by Shannon Morelli then put the Falcons up two. Fanshawe would go on and win the second set 25-21.
The Saints came out strong in the third set and went up 6-0. A nice dig by Jamie McKee (London, ON) resulted in a Fanshawe point, as the Falcons regrouped and cut the deficit to two, 13-11. Unfortunately, St. Clair would maintain the lead and go on to win the set 25-20.
The Saints would continue their momentum in the fourth set and took a 10-7 lead. Shannon Morelli recorded her 18th point of the game with an ace that tied the game 11-11. A huge kill by Acton brought the crowd on their feet and gave the Falcons a slim 16-15 lead. Darian Gropp (Kitchener, ON) then had a service ace of her own to extend the home team's lead to two. A hit by Fanshawe's Katie Stewart (Gananoque, ON) won the Falcons the set by a score of 25-21.
Acton opened the final set for the Falcons with two hits, followed by a McKee ace, but the Saints stayed within reach. Fanshawe continued their attack with a massive kill by Deleary to give the red and white a 10-7 lead. St. Clair made things exciting by tying the score at 14, but Fanshawe was able to hang on and won the set 17-15 to take a 3-2 match victory.
