Pathways describe different academic routes a student could take, and their ability to move from one academic credential to another. At Fanshawe, Pathways relate to credit transfer and credit recognition, involving prior learning, high school courses, preparatory programs, apprenticeship, certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Articulation agreement refers to an official agreement between two or more institutions whereby one or more institutions formally recognizes learning achieved at another institution or institutions.

Recognition of course credit for learning acquired through post-secondary education. It includes advanced standing (block transfer), external credit, and internal credit.

Fanshawe's Pathways database can be searched by your Fanshawe program or your desired institution. We make every effort to reflect the most current pathway information, however, it may be subject to change.

ONTransfer.ca is a free resource to help you plan your post-secondary pathway in Ontario and shows you what transfer opportunities are available.

Advanced standing is the credit you receive from Fanshawe from your previous experience in College, University and/or Prior Learning. Advanced Standing qualifies the applicant for direct entry to the second or higher level of the program on the basis of academic achievement at another institution and/or the PLAR process.

External credit is credit granted by the College for one Fanshawe College course on the basis of previous post-secondary academic achievement at another approved institution or as defined in an approved articulation agreement. Courses will have at least 75% comparable content and learning outcomes. A minimum grade of C must be achieved to grant the External Credit. Some courses or programs may have exceptions to the minimum grade.

Internal credit is credit granted by the College for one Fanshawe College course on the basis of previous credit achieved in a different Fanshawe College course. Courses will have at least 75% comparable content and learning outcomes. A minimum passing grade must be achieved to grant the Internal Credit. Some courses or programs may require a higher grade. Our system will automatically pick up the credit and it will show on your transcript or course EVAL in WebAdvisor.

You are eligible if the courses you successfully completed at university are equivalent or have similar course content to a Fanshawe course. If it is for a full level of year of study it is considered advanced standing. If it is for a number of courses but not a full semester, it is considered external credit.

If your application is based on past learning, which has been acquired through significant work and/or life experiences, you may be eligible to receive credit through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process.

PLAR is a process of evaluating the knowledge and skills gained through experiential and/or non-formal learning for the purpose of obtaining credit.
