I AM...a Current Student Athlete
Fanshawe has a strong tradition of competition in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA). In addition to competitive success, there is also a tradition of academic success and Fanshawe student athletes excel in classroom. We purposely refer to you as “student athletes” because we believe that here you are students first and then athletes.
To be a successful Falcon athlete, there are several things you need to know.
- We expect you to take personal responsibility for your education.
- You are responsible for managing your absences from classes.
- You are responsible for letting the Athletic Officers know if you are struggling academically.
That is not to say we will not help you or support you in this journey, but just as you take personal responsibility for your development as an athlete, the same attention should be played to your development as a student.
The Athletic Officers will do their best to assist and support you. You can contact them at any time if you have a question about anything. They are well connected and can easily guide you in the right direction or make an appropriate referral.
In addition to the support from the Athletic Officers, there are other offices on campus that can assist you in excelling academically.
I AM...a Prospective Student Athlete
Thank you for your interest in Fanshawe College and becoming one of our Falcon Varsity student athletes. In addition to an excellent student experience in athletics, we also offer you the opportunity to develop skills that will move you towards an exciting career path.
The expectation of all of our Falcon student athletes is that they excel equally in the classroom as well as the playing surface. Our coaches and athletic staff care greatly about making sure you graduate. The Athletic Officers are always here for you to support you on your journey. In addition to the support you will receive from the Athletic staff, you also have access to the great supports that are available to all students.
Student athletes can take advantage of assistance from Peer Tutoring, the Learning Centre, their Student Success Advisor, as well as our Counseling and Accessibility services if needed. We have great staff to help you if you are a student that needs an accommodation for a learning disability.
We look forward to helping you excel in your sport, as well as academically.
I AM...a Parent of a Student Athlete
At Fanshawe, we care a great deal about your son or daughter as both a student and an athlete. Our recent academic information on student athletes suggest that as a group they perform better or equal to the general student population.
In addition to the Athletic Officers, there are other Fanshawe College staff available to support them. We have a rich blend of support that assist students as they move towards graduation. This professional staff works with our diverse student population on a daily basis.
I AM...a Professor of a Student Athlete
The Athletics Department realizes that students are here for an education first and athletic participation second. The common reference to Falcon student athletes is intentionally ordered so that students identify themselves as students first and foremost. In addition to graduating student athletes, Athletics is also interested in winning on the playing surface. Recent academic results suggest as a group, that these students do as well or slightly better then the general student population.
Student athletes greatly benefit from your support in the classroom as well they appreciate your understanding when varsity competition requires them to miss classes, tests or assignments. Student athletes are expected to inform you early about absence and conflicts. Additionally, they are not to use participation in athletics as an excuse to hand things in late. As a department, our expectation is that these students are taking personal responsibility for their education and communicating in a timely and effective way. In some cases, especially with playoffs, requests for absences may come on a shorter notice but regular season absences should be communicated shortly after roster selection.
In some cases, you may contacted by an Athletic Officer if a student athlete has identified a concern or is struggling. We will try to put the necessary supports in place to assist that student athlete. The purpose of our contact is to seek your feedback and insights on what interventions would assist them in moving towards success.
