MEN'S BASEBALL:

 

On Saturday afternoon at the OCAA Baseball Provincial Championship in Windsor, the Fanshawe Falcons Baseball team captured the OCAA bronze medal. 

 

Fanshawe fell 6-5 to the hosts from St. Clair in a close quarterfinal game on Friday, scoring three runs in their last at bat but stranding the tying run at third base. The Falcons then rebounded with a dominating 8-1 win over Durham to advance to the semi-final. Tyler Wood (Niagara Falls, ON) tossed a complete game for the victory and was named the player of the game.

 

In the semi versus Humber, the Falcons started strong and had an early 6-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Hawks chipped away and ended up coming back to win the game 7-6, resulting in an OCAA bronze medal for the Falcons. Since Fanshawe's Baseball inception, the Falcons have won an OCAA medal in each year of the program. Fanshawe's Zev Weisdorf (London, ON) was named the player of the game for the bronze medal game and Carlos Arteaga (London, ON) was named a Tournament All-Star.

 

Up next, Fanshawe will head to the 2017 Baseball National Championship hosted by Durham College in Oshawa from October 26-28. The reigning National Champion

MEN'S SOCCER:

 

The #5 nationally ranked Fanshawe Men's Soccer team won their final regular season game over St. Clair last week by a score of 2-1.

 

The first half was very evenly matched, with both teams having six shot attempts. It was a defensive battle, as neither team had any clear opportunities to take the lead. Fanshawe's Mike Sneddon (Mount Brydges, ON) opened the scoring in the second half on a nice shot to the bottom left corner of the net in the 48th minute. Sneddon leads the Falcons in scoring, with nine goals on the season. Fanshawe extended their lead in the 82nd minute, when Bai-Essa Coker (Bakans, Gambia) got his head on a beautiful corner kick by Chris DeDecker (Wallaceburg, ON). In the 90th minute, St. Clair would get a goal of their own, but could not complete the comeback and the Falcons went on to win by a score of 2-1.

 

Fanshawe returns to the field on October 26, when they will play in an OCAA quarterfinal game at the Provincial Championship versus Durham (6-3-1). The Championship will be hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario and will run from October 26-28.

WOMEN'S SOCCER:

 

On Tuesday afternoon, the #11 nationally ranked Fanshawe Women's Soccer team suffered their first regular season loss since 2015, dropping a 1-0 decision to the St. Clair Saints.

 

In the opening 45 minutes, St. Clair got on the board first when they scored on a rebound in the 13th minute. The Falcons struggled to get going, as the shot attempts were 9-1 in the first half in favour of the Saints. Fanshawe goalkeeper Ali Vlasman (Mount Elgin, ON) had seven saves.

 

The Falcons came out strong in the second half and controlled the majority of the possession. In the 65th minute the home team had numerous chances in front of the Saints net off of a corner kick, however were unable to capitalize. Despite outshooting St. Clair 16-5 in the second half, the Falcons could not find the back of the net and would go on to suffer their first loss of the season and see their 21 game regular season unbeaten streak come to an end.

 

Fanshawe will play Durham (7-3-2) in a quarterfinal match on Thursday at the OCAA Championship in Sudbury.

CROSS COUNTRY:

 

Fanshawe Women's and Men's Cross Country teams are currently ranked #1 and #2 in the CCAA respectively.

 

On Saturday, October 28, Fanshawe will host Ontario's top runners at the 2017 OCAA Cross Country Provincial Championships at the Fanshawe Conservation Area. The Women's race begins at 11am with the Men's race starting at noon.

 

 

GOLF:

 

Fanshawe Falcons golfer Thomas Code (Dorchester, ON) finished tied for fourth place at the 2017 CCAA National Golf Championship at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club in Oshawa, Ontario last week.

 

Code set numerous Fanshawe records with his performance, including highest CCAA finish by a Fanshawe golfer. He also set Falcons CCAA records for best single round (71), three day (224) and four day scores (298).

 

After shooting an impressive 74 (+2) in the final round, Code was the top Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) finisher with a score of 298 (+10), only one stroke away from medaling. The top three golfers in the competition finished 288 (E), 296 (+8) and 297 (+9).

 

 

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

 

The Falcons Men's Volleyball squad began league play with two wins last weekend in Northern Ontario.

 

The Falcons beat Cambrian in three straight sets on Saturday evening and then beat Boreal 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

 

Next up for Fanshawe, they will play Conestoga on the road on October 26.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL:

 

The Fanshawe Women's Volleyball team was on the road for the first games of their OCAA regular season this past weekend.

 

The Falcons had two 3-0 sweeps over Cambrian and Boreal to start their season with a pair of wins.

 

Fanshawe will take the court again this upcoming Thursday on the road against Conestoga.

MEN'S BASKETBALL:

 

Last week, the Fanshawe Men's Basketball team wrapped up exhibition play with a 91-82 loss to Seneca. Chris Parker (Toledo, OH) led Fanshawe with 26 points and 8 rebounds.

 

On Friday night, the Falcons defeated the Conestoga Condors in their OCAA regular season home opener by a final score of 89-66. 

 

Fanshawe and Conestoga traded buckets in the first quarter, with the home team holding a slim 18-15 lead after the first ten minutes. The Falcons started the second quarter with back-to-back layups by Lex Van Iperen (Englehart, ON) and Parker. D'Andre Austin (Toronto, ON) extended the home team's lead with a bucket and a foul. The Condors continued to stay within reach with a reverse layup and a pair of foul shots. Eight straight points by rookie Devonte Douse (Cambridge, ON) gave the Falcons a 35-27 lead and they would extend that to a 42-31 advantage at the half.

 

After a huge dunk by Parker in the third quarter, the Falcons picked up the intensity. Parker followed his dunk with a 3-pointer, then added an assist on a Van Iperen three point play. Parker was on fire and hit another three ball to extend Fanshawe's lead to 15. The Falcons used their defensive hustle with a steal by Sean Clendinning (Orillia, ON) to take control of the game in the fourth quarter. A strong rebound by Austin resulted in a triple from Jake Clendinning (Orillia, ON) to give Fanshawe the 80-56 lead. The Falcons would go on to win by a final score of 89-66. Parker led the way with 29 points.

 

The Falcons will take the road to play against Sheridan on Thursday in their next game.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:

 

The Women's Basketball squad won their Tuesday night exhibition game versus Seneca by a final score of 75-71. Despite finding themselves down early, the Falcons clawed their way back into the game, erasing Seneca's 22-point lead and going on to win the game. Local standouts Mikhaila Wright and Chuot Angou had 28 and 25 points respectively.

In their home opener on Friday evening, the Falcons defeated the Conestoga Condors by a final score of 86-50. 

 

The Falcons started the game with intense defense forcing the Condors to commit numerous turnovers. Claire Dechet (Sarnia, ON) would open Fanshawe's scoring with a steal and a layup. Wright would then find Angou on the fast break and the home team jumped out to an early 25-9 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, a strong offensive rebound by Maddy Kielar (Newmarket, ON) resulted in a Wright triple. The Falcons defense continued to give the Condors trouble, as Wright had back-to-back blocked shots in a single possession. At the half, Fanshawe had forced Conestoga into 17 turnovers and held a 41-21 lead.

 

The Falcons would continue to run the floor in the third, getting fast break layups from rookies Morgan Wagg (Sarnia, ON) and Sydney Kendellen (London, ON). Good ball movement on offense resulted in Fanshawe shooting over 50% from the floor in the second half. The Falcons began to pull away after an offensive rebound and put back by Kaleigh Morris (London, ON). Ten Falcons scored at least two points in the win. Wright filled the stats sheet with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 blocks and 5 steals.

 

The Falcons will play against Sheridan in Brampton on October 26.
