(London, Ontario) – On Saturday afternoon, Fanshawe Badminton team member Riley Hogan (5th year, Sault Ste. Marie, ON) captured a bronze medal at the 2018 CCAA Badminton National Championships hosted by Concordia University in Edmonton, Alberta.
Hogan finished in third place in round robin play with a record of 3-2. She then lost to second ranked Ann Hoang of George Brown in the semi-final. Hogan then regrouped in the bronze medal match, where she had a comeback victory (17-21, 21-16, 21-14) against Vancouver Island's Christina Woo to claim the Falcons first CCAA Badminton Women's Singles medal in 30 years. The last time a Fanshawe Badminton Women's Singles student-athlete won a CCAA National Championship medal was in 1988 when Penny Scott won silver.
Sahil Sahil (1st year, India) completed his CCAA tournament in fourth place in Men's Singles. Sahil went 2-3 in round robin play and entered the medal rounds as the fourth seed. Unfortunately, he fell in the semi-final to number one Desmond Wang from Concordia. Sahil then dropped his bronze medal match by scores of 17-21 and 14-21 against Vancouver Island's Graydon Robb. This is Fanshawe Men's Singles top finish since 2007, when Nathanial Allard also placed fourth.
