(London, Ontario) – The Fanshawe Women's Basketball squad (20-3, 2nd in West), who are ranked #11 in Canada, will play for gold on Sunday after a 72-52 semi-final victory over the Niagara Knights (16-7, 4th in West) on Saturday evening at the OCAA Championship. The Falcons will look to upset the host and #1 nationally ranked Humber Hawks (22-0, 1st in West) on Sunday at 5pm.
Fanshawe got off to a strong start, taking a 26-3 lead after the opening frame. The Falcons were led offensively with back-to-back buckets from Mikhaila Wright (London, ON). Fanshawe's Ali Vlasman (Mount Elgin, ON) played excellent defense, drawing an offensive foul on the Knights. The Falcons maintained their momentum with triples from Chuot Angou (London, ON) and Claire Dechet (Sarnia, ON) and went into the locker room with a 45-19 advantage.
The second half was more evenly matched, as the Knights were able to get their offense going. Despite Niagara's best efforts, the Fanshawe lead was too much to overcome, and the Falcons went on to win 72-52. Vlasman was named the player of the game, posting 18 points on 9 of 12 shooting. Wright added 13 points, while Dechet and Angou recorded 10 points each.
The Humber Hawks will look to defend their provincial title, as they have won the OCAA Championship the past three years. Humber has not dropped an OCAA game all season and are led by fifth year players Ceejay Nofuente (3-time OCAA Player of the Year) and Aleena Domingo.
