Preparing your house's HVAC system for winter

Tips to prepare your home's HVAC system for the winter months.

At this time of year, it's in every homeowner’s best interest to give their heating system some TLC as the cold weather hits. Recent technological advances have made today's residential heating equipment more energy efficient and safer than systems from even a decade ago.

Home heating - floor register

What can you do?

  • Ensure that all of the supply air diffusers and air return grills located in the floors, ceilings or walls of your home are open and free of obstructions;
  • Turn the thermostat to heating mode, setting the desired temperature;
  • Reduce stress on your system and wallet by programming your digital thermostat to save energy during unoccupied and nighttime periods;
  • Ensure that all heating equipment is easily accessible and free from nearby clutter and combustible material;
  • Clean or replace furnace air filters;
  • Ensure furnace blower doors are securely in place;
  • Ensure that your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are correctly installed and test to make sure they are functioning;
  • Be aware of any unusual noises or odours coming from the heating system.

Home heating - gas furnace

What should you leave to the professional?

  • Conduct a test of the system's safety shut-down controls;
  • Inspect and test the flame detection system;
  • Inspect the heat exchangers;
  • Check thermostat operation, settings and location;
  • Inspect, lubricate and check the system’s motors;
  • Inspect the venting system and test for carbon monoxide in flue gases and the ambient air;
  • Check for proper combustion and gas input;
  • Confirm that the humidification system is working properly and check the condition of filters.
